Selina stared blankly at the wall until the scalding hot water turned cold. She wanted to scrape off her skin piece by piece, but the water could burn it off instead. That worked. She helped by scrubbing her skin raw with soap in an effort to wash off the buried disgust and shame that she normally suppressed so well. Her eyes were empty and she didn’t move afterwards. She was merely standing with her hands braced against the wall as the water ran over her body for hours and she didn’t move until she heard someone else enter. She then blinked and slowly pulled her thoughts back to the present.
Selina finally left the showers and got dressed in loose athletic pants and a simple t-shirt. As she dropped by her room to drop off her things she paused and stared at the bed she now hated and couldn’t stand to look at, feeling like she wanted to get into the scalding hot water all over again, but knowing she couldn’t. There wasn’t any left. Selina went outside instead, even though it was some godforsaken hour in the morning.
She walked aimlessly not paying attention to her surroundings. Maybe if she kept going she could leave it all behind… she let out a derisive laugh at the thought. She knew better. No matter where she ran or which country she moved to, some things would never change. Selina bumped into a two tipsy guys on their way back to their dorms… the fight the three of them got into was a type of soothing. Her unbridled rage had her making mistakes, but she didn’t care. She wanted this. She even wanted the pain that came with it. It gave her something else to focus on.
When they ran off, she made her way to the lake and sat down on the docks, her knees pulled up to her chest and her arms wrapped around them as she stared listlessly into the water. The blood dripping from her busted lip didn’t catch her notice, nor did the intense pain from a broken finger… or was it two? The other might just be fractured or jammed, she wasn’t sure at this point. Her head hurt and she didn’t know if it was because of the fight or because of the thoughts constantly racing through her mind. As some blood dripped down from her forehead, she figured it could have been the fight.
Every time the memories came back though, her grip tightened until the pain in her broken finger blocked them out again. The fight had been useful for that at least. As she stared at the lake, part of her wanted to just leap in the lake and let herself drown… and another part of her was starting to agree. She was far too weary to put that much effort into dying though.
