Victoria Trinity Foster
FACE CLAIM: Alycia Debnam-Carey
---------------------------------
AGE: 20
GENDER: Female
ORIENTATION: Bisexual
POSITION: Student
POWER:
Empathy Assimilation. Tori has the ability to absorb and experience the emotions of other people. To put it simply, her power is an enhanced version of common, every day empathy. She takes on the emotions of others fully (though she can only successfully assimilate to one person's feelings at a time), and experiences them as if they were her own. The stronger the emotion(s) an individual is feeling, the easier it is for Tori to pick it up, and the more she feels it herself.
LIMITATIONS:
Tori's power is limited by range. Generally, she can only pick up on people's emotions if they are less than ten feet away; but the farther they are, the harder it is to do so. Skin-to-skin contact is the easiest way for her to use her power. She finds it very difficult to exercise her ability on individuals with mutations that cause psychic abilities, though there are some exceptions (she can still access the feelings of mind readers and those with telekinesis).
SIDE-EFFECTS:
Tori has perpetual confusion of her own emotions. She can't tell the difference between her own feelings and the feelings of others. Using her power always leaves her feeling tired. If there is a drastic difference between her own emotions and the emotions of those she assimilates to, she is at risk of having a panic attack and stomach aches. Over-using her power causes panic, stress, exhaustion, physical illness (such as head-aches, nausea, vomiting, and even nosebleeds), and enhances the symptoms of her depression and PTSD.
HEIGHT: 5'6
HAIR COLOR: Brown
EYE COLOR: Green with hazel around the pupils
MISC: She has her ears and industrial on her left side pierced. Tori also has a tattoo of monarch butterflies fluttered upward from her hip to her shoulder on her right side. There are some small scars on her arms and larger ones on her back.
PERSONALITY: Tori is an all around friendly person. She loves smiling and seeing other people smile. Making people happy is one of her favourite things which is why she is a pushover. She wouldn't really say she's a social butterfly, but she keeps a few close friends and is almost always willing for some one-on-one time with them. Groups of more than three people are exhausting, after all.
Photography is her favourite hobby to escape to. There is nothing quite like seeing the world through a lens and capturing it in a picture you can hold onto forever. A single picture can hold so much: love, despair, beauty, fear... it's amazing. Tori picked up photography at the academy and falls into the practice whenever she wishes to escape her reality. It's a calming tool. But it doesn't always help.
When photography fails, she sings. She sings in the shower, when she's alone, in front of friends people, when a good song is playing on the radio.. Tori just sings. She does it only for herself and has never performed in a crowd though several people have tried to encourage her to. But, Tori is very afraid of being the centre of attention. Though attention itself is nice and makes her feel good about herself, she wouldn't want to take the spotlight. It's nerve racking to have all those people staring at you, judging you.
Tori is a paranoid person and figures people will think nothing but the worse of her. She thinks people she knows are always talking about her and laughing at her. This contributes to her trust issues. It's very hard for her to trust people and let them into her lives but she still wants to see everyone she passes happy. Perhaps that's why she tries so hard to make their lives better and not get in the way of what they want.
Whenever things get bad for her, she isolates herself. This is a bad habit she was never able to break. If Tori is gone from sight for a few days, you can guarantee she's in her dorm playing with her rats. She doesn't like bringing people down and would much rather suffer alone than make others worry about her. She's very self sacrificing and resents herself for it. Hell, she even resents other people for not seeming to care.
Part of her problem is Tori feels like she understands everyone else while no one understands her. It causes a lot of sadness, self hatred, and anger within her. She craves nothing more than to be understood to her core. It's her only true desire.
SECRET(S): Tori has PTSD from the various abuses she has suffered in her life. There are very few people who know she has this illness and even fewer know the reason why she has it. She use to sleep with older men for marijuana and alcohol between the ages of fourteen to sixteen.
FATHER: Giovanni Antonelli
MOTHER: Amelia Foster
SIBLINGS: Steven Antonelli (half-brother; 26), Sarah Antonelli (half-sister, 24)
WORTHY MENTIONS: Stacey Antonelli (step-mom; 50). Has male rats named Skitters and Scatters.
CHILDHOOD: Tori was born in Manchester, England. She would have been raised there by her single mother, Amelia, if it wasn't for the fact her mom was terminally ill. It was only a matter of time, the doctors had told her, before she would pass on to the next world; so she called up the father of her child and begged him to take Tori in before her beloved daughter could be orphaned. Though her mother and father had been nothing more than an affair, her father agreed and Tori was moved to Idaho in the United States at the age of six.
(Trigger warning: child abuse) Life with her father wasn't as comforting and kind as it had been with her mom, but Tori learned to love him and the rest of his family. When she was a good girl and did chores when ordered to, she was rewarded by the absence of insults and the occasional praise. When she disobeyed, she was rewarded with blaming, hitting, and yelling. It wasn't hard for her to pick which one she liked more. And so, despite feeling like she was worthless, she did whatever her father and hateful step-mom told her to. She even obeyed her half-siblings. She just wanted to please those she loved.
Gas lighting was an unfortunate part of her childhood. Whenever Tori tried to bring up an issue she was having with any member of the family, she was assaulted by comments such as "so-and-so would never do something like that.", "why are you lying?", "it's all in your head", and so forth. This made her question if everything was in her head. Perhaps the things she thought her family was doing wasn't being done at all. Why would people who loved her want to hurt her? They wouldn't. It didn't make sense.
Tori felt very lonely and isolated within her family. It didn't help that the letters from her mother stopped showing up when she was nine years old. She wasn't sure how to be happy in a family that did nothing but hurt her.. but she also knew she couldn't hate them. They were all she had and they gave her everything she needed: shelter, food, education, hobbies. And if they didn't love her, they wouldn't give her any of that, right?
ADOLESCENCE: (Trigger warning: sexual assault) When Tori was 13, her half-brother, Steven, sexually assaulted her. Tori remained silent about it due to fear of being denied and yelled at. She knew she had been wronged and there was no amount of denial her family could give her to make her think otherwise. It was hard to live in the same house as her assaulter, and she was more than thankful when Steven moved out the following summer.
As she grew into adolescence, she became more and more reckless. Tori stayed out later than her curfew, she started talking back to her father and step-mother, she began sleeping around with whoever would have her, she broke things that weren't hers, and she drank and smoked dope when she could get her hands on it. Tori was unhappy and she was desperately trying to show everyone her distress without wording it.
The sleeping around part didn't help her any especially. People would seek her out just to screw her since she was "so easy". Even if she didn't want it, she would do it. There were some occasions where she tried to back out but who she was with would have her the way they wanted anyway. It made her feel like a tool for other peoples' pleasure.
When she was sixteen, things changed within her. Her emotional turmoil was even more confusing to her when the emotions of others started forcing themselves on top. Some days she was absolutely angry when someone around her was. Some days she did nothing but cry when she tried to comfort a friend whose boyfriend cheated on her. Others she was ecstatic when someone told her good news. The sudden changing of her-what she thought was because of hormones- emotions caused her to have frequent headaches and nausea. Tori felt constantly sick and began to skip school in order to lock herself in her room and avoid people.
But two and a half weeks after her emotions started running rampant, a knock on her door signalled the beginning of better days. People from an academy in Montana had come to recruit her. Tori could hardly believe her luck and was more than pleased to go. Really, she was ready to do anything to get out and was glad life had decided to make that easy for her.
Life at the academy was already an improvement. But she was finding it very difficult to learn. Though she was enjoying her classes, Tori couldn't concentrate on homework. She also didn't believe at all that she was a mutant. How could someone learn to control their ability if they even denied having it? She just thought she was a very empathetic person who had instability issues.
It took her a whole year and a half at the academy to believe she was different than the common person. But even then, she found it very challenging to control her power. Tori had been assigned a counsellor the same week she had arrived and it was the hopes of the staff that sorting through her childhood trauma would help her control her power and improve her quality of life.
ADULTHOOD: Tori didn't graduate with those she took classes with. She isn't even close to feeling like she has control over her ability. Though sometimes she can call upon it at will, it still activates itself when someone around her is feeling strongly or she herself is in a vulnerable state of mind. Tori feels a little bit of resentment for it, but she knows it's best for her to remain a student. She just hopes it won't take her until twenty-five to graduate.
At the very least, she feels far better than she did as a teen. Tori has some tools she can use whenever she feels out of control; but she's well aware there is still so much work to be done before she can be the person she wants to be.
SAMPLE: He was there, and Makura wasn't sure how she managed to look him in the eyes. His warm, gold-brown eyes had blackened and his figure was dark and dead. Time and time again she had watched the only man she ever loved meet his demise with such bravery and passion. They had always managed to find each other again, no matter what realm. This time was different, however. This time was the end.
Shoaryon. Oh, Shoaryon...
Shoaryon straightened his back, slowly walking over to where Tiana layed wrapped in his wives arms. He raised his staff and pointed the more decorative end towards the ghostly girl. His eyes looked deadened and his demeanour was darker than the history books had ever depicted it to be. His face was flaking small, white stars, the bright lights floating away in the wind and fading in the distance. He was dying.
“Makura, let go that girl. I must finish this before I leave you again.” He spoke in a blank tone. Faint golden sparks were flying off the tip of his staff. The atoms themselves started to become active and shook rapidly around the staff, circling it. Golden fire faded into view as Shoaryon's magic was charging. Tiana screamed and hid in Makura's torso. “She is the key to the vortex. She is it’s cause.”
How could Makura deny Shoaryon? She loved him and she trusted his judgement more than anything. And here he was, standing in front of her with a staff pointed at Tiana, his dying words were a request that his wife let him destroy a little girl's life before he vanished from the world for good. How could this innocent child be the cause of something as terrible as the vortex? How could he ask his loving wife for this?
"No." She finally whispered, tears forming in her eyes but never falling. Makura straightened on her knees and pulled Tiana behind her so the staff's aim was blocked from its initial target.
"No! How could you? How could you do this? Damn it, Shoaryon, she's just a girl! There are always more ways to stop something. She just wants to see her family; she's just afraid. And haven't I screwed everything up enough? Haven't I abandoned enough children in my life? Maybe this is a chance where we can finally act like better parents; where we can give a child what they deserve. Just look at her. Does she really look like a threat?"
Makura was ignorant and that was something she learned years ago. What would Shoaryon do to his wife now that she had denied him? Would he destroy her? Would he take her to the abyss he was about to become a part of?
Shoaryon lurched forward, wrapping Makura in a hug, his staff pointed behind her. Tiana had risen to run for freedom, but the child was much too slow for the experienced sorcerer. Golden fire exploded from the staff and engulfed the little girl. She bent backwards, her eyes opening wide as the flames swallowed her body. Tiana’s scream only lasted a short second before she evaporated into nothing.
“I hope one day you realize why I had to do that,” Shoaryon murmured in Makura’s ear, “I love you.”
His form then shattered into small, shimmering lights that quickly faded to nothing.
