Amara Lynn Kingston
FACE CLAIM: Ester Dean
---------------------------------
AGE: 23
GENDER: Non-Binary (Femme Genderfluid They/She pronouns)
ORIENTATION: Bisexual
POSITION: College Student
POWER: Flower Power! (AKA Botanokinesis)
She can force premature growth in a plant.
She can sense what’s ailing a plant, but she won't intuitively know what it is unless she's done the research necessary to be able to identify it. For instance she'll feel something is "wrong" with a plant, and depending on the type of sickness it'll feel different, but she won't necessarily know specifically how to "fix" it without having the knowledge of what type of illness affects the plant that way.
She can "awaken" dormant plants, but can't bring them back to life if completely dead.
She can manipulate a plant’s physical movement. i.e. animate it and make it "walk" or dance or whatever she's in the mood for.
Amara can absorb the stored energy from plants to supplement her own energy or vice versa. If a plant is connected with others, sometimes she can access the connected plants as well, but regardless of whether or not she can access the energy through the connection, the whole group would be affected in trying to replace the energy lost. She doesn't do this often because she can also feel the plant's reaction to being drained, and it often kills the plant, which she feels due to her connection.
LIMITATIONS:
The quicker she forces a plant to mature, the quicker it will die.
She usually has to be in direct contact with the plant to manipulate it in any way, but can affect plants within a three or four meter range with intense focus.
She’s giving her own energy/life force when forcing a plant to grow prematurely, so she can’t give any more energy than she already has.
Some plants are much more difficult to manipulate then others, and she can’t move anything she wouldn’t have the physical strength to move (ie she can’t make a tree get up and dance… though that’s not to say she hasn’t tried… once. Never again.)
The most she can really do when forcing a plant to grow/mature is get it to its normal health. She can maximize her ability and grow super healthy plants that seem bigger and better than normal, but that’s only because she’s optimized the best conditions for the plant to grow.
Cannot manipulate wood, even when part of a tree unless the tree is very young and the wood is limber.
Cannot control anything separated from the "parent" or original plant. Everything still has to be alive/rooted to the ground.
Cannot create plants out of thin air. Has to have a seed at the very least.
Must be near rooted plants for power to work.
Can only force a plan to grow as far as she can reach with her hands above her head, so about 7-9 feet high.
At this point, she can only manipulate one plant at a time.
SIDE-EFFECTS:
Need to sleep.
As much as her power can help with her depression, if she's out of the sunlight for too long or away from plants for too long, she'll get even more prone to depressive episodes.
Connects with plants easier than she connects with humans.
Fainting when she overuses her power.
It’s also physically painful and draining to use too much of her power.
She starts to get stiff and feel heavy if she's in commune with plants like a tree. Or she feels light and sort of like she can blow away if she's in contact with lightly rooted flowers etc. It's not any real physical change that happens so much as a mental adjustment.
HEIGHT: 173 cm/5’8”
HAIR COLOR: Dark brown with the edges dyed red.
EYE COLOR: Dark Brown
MISC:
Amara wears a lot of bright clothing. She’s very fashionable when she has the energy for it. Sometimes she just gives up and wears her fave sweats and a large t-shirt, but only when she’s feeling depressed or tired. Amara loves anything with floral prints that are modernized or creatively incorporated into the clothing. She doesn’t do the traditional 1950s floral prints ever.
The reason she likes bight colors as much as she does, is because when she was depressed she didn't have enough energy to wear anything but her dullest clothes and she also had a liking for dark colors back then. So her bright colored clothing has become a way of self care for her. She essentially wears bright colors to make herself happy and as a sort of physical effort in warding off her depression.
PERSONALITY:
She struggles with severe depression, and gardening is what helps her to self soothe and to be happy. Amara is an activist for the various communities she’s a part of, and most of her work is done online since she doesn’t often have the energy to deal with people directly. Sometimes the pain and stress of it all becomes too much and she has to take a break, but she does what she can when she has the energy for it.
Amara is actually quite optimistic in spite of her depression, and is often willing to see the good in people and situations, whether or not it’s actually there. She does have limits though, and is not afraid to break off toxic or unhealthy relationships. Amara is very aware of what she needs to do to maintain self-care so she doesn’t slip deeper into her depression, and she takes her time alone pretty seriously. She also cares a great deal for others though and is very empathetic, so she often finds herself at war with her own desires regarding her social life. Part of her wants to be around people and get to know them, whereas another part of her needs time alone to recuperate and for the sake of self-care.
Amara has little tolerance for prejudice and oppressive ignorance and though she doesn’t have much of a temper, it can sometimes be seen in instances where she has to confront bigotry. Usually she’ll ignore some of the less blatant forms of it if she can, as she detests confrontation, but sometimes she’ll get caught up in things she later wishes she hadn’t.
SECRET(S):
She’s genderfluid- she doesn’t tell anybody she doesn’t trust. It’s mainly for the sake of not having to put up with ignorant bullshit that she does this, as she holds zero sense of shame for who she is. Amara merely picks her battles very carefully since she has so little energy to spare.
Similarly, she doesn’t tell anyone about what happened with the cop at age eleven. Shame may be more involved with this decision, but there’s also so much ignorance around the topic of assault that she also just doesn’t want to deal with the extraneous bullshit.

CHILDHOOD:
Amara was a bright-eyed and happy child who got along with virtually everybody she met. She loved flowers from a young age as well as everything to do with plants and gardening. Her only real conflict revolved around whether or not to allow the man who’d deceived her mother into her life. Amara, after hearing her mother cuss Frederick Ford out one night, decided to stay away from Frederick, so she’s only met him a rare few times in the entirety of her life.
Hakim, the man she considers to be her true father to this day, adored her and even set aside a place in their back yard so she could take care of her very own garden. Her mother was just as supportive and loving, and often took Amara shopping for new flowers to plant or for any new tools she needed to better care for her own personal plot of land.
Amara’s younger sister was born when Amara was three years old, and though the child was named Tobias and assigned to the male gender, Toby would later figure out that she was actually a girl. The two fought, as all siblings do, but mostly they just played and had fun. They grew very close very quickly and the two of them trusted each other with everything. They even had a made up language that they shared between the two of them that no one else could ever understand.
Toby and Amara were also very close with a young boy across the street named Darrick who often came over to play. He was just as imaginative as the two siblings and the three of them had vast adventures through many distant lands and eras all in the confines of Amara’s backyard. Epic sword fights, political dramas, and historical events were all reimagined in the minds of the three children and even Latisha and Hakim would occasionally get caught up in the thrill of it.
ADOLESCENCE:
Amara’s adolescence was not quite as idyllic. Darrick was twelve and Amara was eleven when they first realized the world wasn’t quite as good as they’d believed. Amara had been walking with Darren through a predominately white neighborhood when the police car slowed down next to them and started interrogating the two. He stopped and frisked the both of them for suspicious behavior, and his hands lingered for way too long on Amara and in all the wrong places.
Amara didn’t tell anybody, and Darrick was sworn to secrecy. Amara was not going to tell her parents because she feared they would report the incident, and she didn’t want to have anything to do with the institution that had allowed it. Toby was the only other one she trusted with the information, and they both cried about it.
She started to get singled out when she was in middle school, around age twelve, because of her depression that was becoming more and more apparent. It was partly medical, as Amara’s mother’s side of the family had a long history with depression. It was also partly situational because of the assault. Due to her depression, Amara didn’t have the energy to take care of herself the way the other kids did, and they noticed. She was also falling asleep in class due to insomnia from the depression keeping her up the night before, and couldn't find the energy to connect with her friends the way she once had.
Her old sweats became daily wear because she didn't have the time or energy to care about clothing, and her blase demeanor didn't encourage new friendships. The other students also took notice of Toby’s more feminine behavior at around the same time. Between the two of them, Amara and Toby became the Weird siblings as there was obviously something wrong with the family that could produce two such abnormal children.
Amara got dangerously depressed around the time she was fourteen, and as she was sitting outside staring into the fallow garden she’d neglected, a single flower from her favorite rose bush started to bloom in front of her even though it was the wrong season for it and it was growing way too fast to be naturally early. Amara stared, completely dumbfounded since it was the middle of winter and she'd abandoned this garden over a year ago. Somehow word got around about what had happened, and within a week she was recruited into Bellefonte’s high school.
The reason for her manifestation got the attention of the school’s board and she was assigned to a woman for counseling. Amara didn’t mind the counseling, but she didn’t entirely trust the woman either. Amara put up enough of a positive front to get through high school though, and she even got relatively good grades. Sometimes, due to her depression, her grades fell to C’s or D’s, but she graduated on time and her grades were good enough to get her accepted into Bellefonte’s University.
Toby told her parents and Amara that she was a woman when Amara was sixteen. All three of them were surprised, and none of them really knew how to react to the information. They’d thought Tobias might be gay, but they’d never imagined that she could be a woman. Amara researched all she could in an effort to support her now sister, though she still said and did quite a few ignorantly transmisogynistic things in regards to Toby’s realized identity.
The parents were similar, but eventually they came around and fully funded Toby's gender realignment surgery and hormone replacement therapy.
Eventually, Amara learned better, but she still feels guilt when she thinks back to the first year after Toby told them her true gender. Amara is still in the learning process, and she still makes mistakes, but she’s much better than what she was in high school. Amara even figured out that part of her depression came from not fitting into the gender that society had ascribed to her. She realized her genderfluidity in her first year at college, and the discovery brought Amara and Toby even closer together.
ADULTHOOD:
The same front she’d kept up in high school served her well in college, as she was able to get through her first semester with relatively good grades, however, she began to fall apart in her second semester. The weight of depression, her assault, her questioning of her own identity, and her bisexuality all came crashing down.
Amara dropped out before she reached her junior year and took some time off to try and heal. She hooked up with a therapist from her community that she quickly grew close to, and for the first time since the assault occurred, she told somebody else what had happened. It took a few years and lots of experimenting with different types of medications for her depression to stabilize, but now she’s attempting to return to college and finish out her degree in botany. Darrick was a huge support during this time, and he stuck by her side even when things got too dark for Amara to handle alone.
She’s just starting out with one three hour course to ease herself back into school and to see if she can handle the stress of classes again, but she’s determined to finish her degree no matter how long it takes. She got reassigned to Beth Young, and this time she’s decided to be more honest, as her lying about her health only made things so much worse in high school. She’s skyping with the therapist she’d grown close to every other week as well, so she can keep in touch and so she can have access to further support.
