Getting to Know You

    Selina made her way through the bleachers and was happy to find her phone where she’d left it. It was a beautiful summer day, and the sky was overcast so the sun wasn’t beating down in the midafternoon. She was so going to go for a hike later. Her favorite creek would be silvery in the muted lighting and her favorite fallen tree would be waiting for her. Definitely a perfect day for a hike… maybe a swim too. She wouldn’t need her bathing suit either, since almost no one ever headed out that way.


    She turned to leave and saw a guy who looked like he was… sleeping? Out here? Selina approached him quietly and was about to say hello to see if he was awake or not when she tripped and fell on top of him instead. Shit. Well, that was one way to introduce yourself. Selina apologized repeatedly as she pushed herself back up and off of him while also trying to find a place for her hands that wasn’t incredibly awkward or inappropriate, “I’m terribly sorry, I was looking for my phone and was just leaving, I didn’t mean to- I just fell. I’m so so sorry,” she offered as she got up.


    Usually she wasn’t this apologetic about falling on top of people… then again falling in top of people wasn’t really a usual enough occurrence for her to say whether this was a normal response or not. He was cute though. Not altogether a bad person to fall on top of, if she did say so herself. Selina almost laughed at her own train of thought, but she kept it to herself. Selina was in a good mood, but she had a feeling he might not be near as amiable since he’d been woken up so abruptly. Whoops.

Here he was, enjoying a lazy day basking in the sun. Well, maybe not as much, considering how he was inside the arena, but it was the thought that counted, right? After all, with all the nights the boy spent awake, he saw no problems in sleeping wherever he saw fit. Today, that happened to be the bleachers in the arena. He'd hoped he'd get a good few hours in before duty called - though, in which case, duty happened to be someone falling on top of him.

Stirring with a low 'oof', Oliver's eyes pressed open wide and he stared at the girl, whom for whatever reason, was currently on top of him. His head tilted curiously to the side, and in his still sleepy haze, he simply stared as she muttered several apologies. She continued talking and Oliver hardly got anything from it, save from something about a phone, leaving and another apology. And just like that, she'd removed herself from his body, and he could finally breathe normally.

Pushing himself up into a sitting position, Oliver's hand came up to rub the back of his neck. His brown eyes never left the girl. "At least a pretty girl beats my annoyin' alarm clock," he said as he stifled a yawn, arms stretching above his head. He couldn't even be arsed to get annoyed at the girl. Most likely because he was still in the process of waking up.

    Selina laughed and shook her head, “I suppose that is something to be grateful for,” she agreed as she watched him in curiosity. “Though, finding an alarm clock in this arena seems like it could be difficult, unless you’re waiting for a fight to start,” she added with a smile. Maybe she was slightly embarrassed from her unusual lapse in the ability to keep her balance, and maybe offering up a different focus for conversation was a way of maneuvering around that, but she was genuinely interested in the type of person who would think the bleachers were a good place to find rest.


    Selina straightened her clothing and looked down at him, “And you aren’t worried about someone stealing from you?” she teased. Pickpocketing probably wasn’t all that popular a hobby here at Bellefonte, but still. It took all types and from the trip she’d been a part of earlier in the year, she knew first hand that this school wasn’t filled with angels. Selina wasn’t typically the thieving type, but she wasn’t completely above it either. Besides, with all of the friends she had that weren’t exactly on the right side of the law, she wasn’t the type to judge.


    “I’m Selina by the way,” she offered with a shrug. She figured he had a right to know who’d woken him up so abruptly. It was the least she could really offer.

"Aye," he nodded, matching the girl's smile as she laughed. "You do know that phones comes with built in alarm clocks, yeah?" he asked, his head tilting. It was obvious that the boy was rather amused and clearly joking. For once, he didn't underestimate the person he talked to. He actually, honestly, thought that the girl had some sense of an intelligent brain hiding behind all that dark hair. Which was a whole lot more than what he could say about most other people he met.

Shrugging his shoulders, Oliver stifled a yawn. "Nah," he began, lips pursing as he looked out over the empty bleachers. "Everything I have that's worth stealin' is replaceable." He didn't establish any emotional connections to the objects he owned. He had enough money to buy whatever it was that he needed in terms of what he was wearing and everything he didn't want stolen, he didn't keep on him. It was rather simple, really.

He looked back at the girl when she offered her name. Nodding once, Oliver offered her a faint smile. "Oliver," he offered in turn. He didn't see any point in not offering his name. It wasn't as if it mattered at the end of the day. He'd likely not see the girl again, unless chance happened upon them and made them meet again.

    Selina acted slightly surprised, “I had no idea.” She pulled her ancient Nokia phone out of her pocket and acted as if she were studying it intently for a moment, “Though, I think my phone may not be quite so high tech,” she joked. Selina turned to him with a grin and shrugged, “Must have been the reason the thought slipped my mind,” she added with a smile.


    Selina then watched him in interest, “Hmm, perhaps,” she agreed. She never carried anything expensive on her person except for her phone… but that wasn’t exactly a top dollar item that people would waste their time stealing. At least, not when there were teenagers who openly left their I-phones and other far more interesting gadgets lying around for the taking. Of course, he could always be a wealthy snob who was capable of replacing even the most expensive objects, but she didn’t quite get that vibe from him… yet.


    “I would make a joke about ‘wanting some more,’ but I’ll bet you’ve pretty much heard them all,” she teased. There may or may not have been a suggestive undertone in there… though with Selina, innuendo was almost always a safe bet. And yes, she was familiar with Dickens. For some reason people seemed to be surprised she read at all, which was either infuriating or amusing depending on her mood.
