Looking For A Specialist

Tamara rarely left the south wing. It was her domain where she ruled as... well maybe not as queen but something pretty close to that. Yet something had her venture out of her world. Or, to be precise, someone. And that someone made her want to seek another someone, hence the whole leaving the south wing and go all the way to the lab.

There was a name written on the door. Seiji Lockard, side-effect specialist. Exactly who she wanted to see. Recently, a young girl arrived to the school and she was terrified of everything. The girl could turn objects to sand, provided sand was one of the component. She already made a window disappear as well as a few bricks on the school. Tam also gave her plastic glasses since the others clearly couldn’t do. But lately, she decided to no longer get out of her room. No matter how many times Tamara told her it was alright, that they could repair whatever she damaged, she feared to get out and hurt someone. Probably to turn someone into sand too. Tamara pointed out that people were not made of sand so she couldn’t turn one into a pile of sand, it changed nothing. She was growing kind of desperate and she didn’t feel like it was her job to deal with that.

She tried a trainer but the girl didn’t want to train. The other option Tamara came with was ask someone who knew a lot about powers to go and talk to her and show her the importance of getting out of her room and train and that she could do that without anything terrible happening. With what this school had already seen, her power weren’t all that scary.

Tamara knocked before opening. “Mister Lockard? Seiji? Whatever you call yourself? Are you in here? I’d like to discuss the case of a student with you” Tamara vaguely remembered what Seiji looked like but she couldn’t be entirely sure. With a name like that however, she assumed she only had to look for an Asian guy and she’d be fine. She dared enter, looking around to see if she could find him. He better be here, she didn’t want to run throughout the school to find him.

"No, that can't be right. That would mean..." Seiji muttered to himself as he was reaching into his mini fridge in his office to have a food break. He had been working on identifying the chemical breakdown of someone’s power in the lab part of his office not too long ago and was now in need of food. He had been working so hard that it practically took his snakes to make sure that he was taking care of himself. Leevi was with him at the moment, hanging out on top of Seiji's computer as the snake watched his owner grab something to eat.

"What? Don't give me that look." Seiji said as he closed the fridge behind him and saw that Leevi was looking at him. Not that the snake was actually giving him a look other than the look he was capable of. Seiji just could hear what the snake was thinking and thus that was in a way what communicated into 'the look' Leevi was giving him. "I'm eating; you didn't say that I had to stop thinking about work. Plus, who is the owner here?" Seiji pointed out and asked his snake. Odd how he used to call the shots but now his snakes seemed to be the ones pulling the strings.

That or they had always been pulling the strings and just now he was starting to catch onto it. He had just sat down and taken a large bite out of the sub he had grabbed, having underestimated just how hungry he was until he had unwrapped the meal. Thus when the knock was at the door, he was unable to say something because his mouth was full and it was rude to speak with your mouth full. That and when he took a bite of his sandwich, some of the condiments and lettuce decided it wanted to fall out onto his shirt.

So when the door opened and a beautiful woman walked in, he was super red as he stood there frozen in a state of half trying to clean up. He swallowed, it hurting a little because of how large the bite had been that he just forced to go down. "H-hello. I'm Seiji Lockard and you may call me whatever you like." Seiji said as he unfroze long enough to speak and actually get back to cleaning himself up. "What can i do for you?" Seiji said, most of his focus still on cleaning up his small mess as Leevi was practically in a trance staring at this female human.

Tamara knew Seiji’s face, she simply didn’t associate the face with the name. To her, someone called the ‘side-effect specialist’ had to be old or, at the very least, older than she was. He had to have been doing this for years. He wasn’t some kid who happened to attend college on the side. This explained why, when this young man stood up, a sub in his hands with lettuce falling from it, claiming to be Seiji Lockard, she just stared at him without making any movement. She didn’t even notice the snake, she just couldn’t believe it. He had to be Mister Lockard’s assistant, right?

“You’re the side-effect specialist?” Tamara asked, pointing at him. She was not trying to hide her disbelief. He was a kid! A handsome, certainly able to get to bars without a fake I.D. but to her, a kid nonetheless. She was supposed to think someone who barely seemed old enough to have finished medical school was an expert?

She tried to shake this off. If he was indeed Seiji and not his assistant, he might not like her attitude and she didn’t want to antagonize him when she came to ask for his help. “I came here to talk about a student. She recently arrived and refuses to leave her room in fear that- oh my god, is that a snake!?” Tamara had walked closer to his desk where he sat to eat as she talked but she froze and forgot what she had been saying when she finally noticed the creature, loose on the desk and staring straight at her. She used to kill snakes, when she lived in her village, but they never were that big. She totally lost track of what she had been telling him.

Seiji didn't know what thoughts were going through Tamara's mind when she saw him, but he thought it was along the lines involving how messy he currently was. It was not all that bad, just some lettuce, but it still didn't look very professional. Technically he was on his lunch break or well near the end of it since he got caught up in his work and forgot to take a break. So he was eating late and then it was work for a few more hours before he had one late night class to go to. He had indeed been doing the whole 'side-effects' for years.

However, that was mostly in terms of side effects on humans and mutants when it came to what medication, drugs, and poisons did to their bodies and so on. The job position he had about a year or so now but he still had been in the 'field' of side effects for about six years or so. Yet he had only been in college for it in the last four years and didn't focus on mutants specifically until a year ago. So yes, he was the specialist but he would not claim that he was an expert, not yet. "I am, what can I help you with." Seiji said as he started to get his blush under control once he started to get most of his small mess cleaned up.

He didn't mind her tone at all, only thinking that perhaps she was expecting to see some old guy or perhaps someone that looked different then him. He didn't really know but he was not going to be upset if people were not pleased by what they saw when they met him. He quickly started to pull open his files on his computer when she started to speak about a student, only to jump a little when she pointed out that he had a snake. Now he was feeling like he should put his power under his nameplate on his office. "Yes, this is Leevi. Don't worry he is harmless, but if you have a fear of snakes I can put him away." Seiji said as he already got up.

He moved to pick up Leevi who quickly started to wrap his body around on everything he could on Seiji's desk so it would not be easy to pick him up without making a mess. Leevi was a male, Eastern Kingsnake, and was about 2.5ft long.

The fact some of what was inside his sub got out and fell on him really didn’t bother Tam. It seemed almost inevitable with the way they were filled sometimes. And she might have caught him by surprise, coming here. It wasn’t like she bothered to call first or ask for him to come over to the south wing. This guy had to be some sort of genius for the school to consider him a specialist. You’re not a specialist when you still attended college. Not in her opinion, for sure.

But Seiji assured her that he was the side specialist. And his name was on the door, not anyone else’s. Besides, she needed someone to get this issue off her back. She would trust him. Even if he was not as much of an expert as the fact he had an office could lead anyone to think, he had to know a little more how to explain things to this girl. That was enough for her.

Or, at least, it was, until the snake chased her from her thoughts for a moment. What was this thing doing loose? It was nothing like the grass-snakes she might have encountered in her youth. Seiji insisted on the creature to be harmless. “It’s not poisonous or anything?” She knew the snake had to actually get close to her and bite her for the poison to really matter, and Tamara was ready to jump on something and stag that thing if it tried, but she still had to ask. “I’m not scared just not used to them out. Unless I’m outside in the wild. Which I’m not.” Yes, she was basically telling him to put that snake away. Because as much as she wanted to chase the snake from her thoughts and focus on the reason of her visit to Seiji, she couldn’t.

Seiji had recalled what she had said in terms of needing his help for, but he figured he had better focus on putting Leevi away so she could focus. He could already tell that she was not fully comfortable around the reptile, but he didn't know if it was out of fear or just because it was weird to have a snake staring her up and down. And Leevi was most certainty staring her up and down as if he was so pervert checking her out. "Not at all. Lampropeltis getula, commonly known as the Eastern Kingsnake is one hundred percent harmless. He is a constrictor." Seiji informed her as he worked on untangling Leevi from around the things on his desk.

"I understand. I'll put him away right away." Seiji said, managing to get Leevi untangled and carrying him to the nearest tank. That tank didn't have a lid on top of it, but Seiji order his snake to stay inside of the tank for the time that Tamara was here. Leevi didn’t want to, but he did as he was told and instead stretched his body up just enough so he could rest his head on the side of the tank at the top. His gazed still locked on Tamara who he was watching every movement of. He was still in the tank, so no one could really get upset with him.

"Now, you were saying something about a girl refusing to leave her room?" Seiji asked as he moved back over to his computer and sat down. He wiped his hands off quickly and was already pulling files in order to find this girl that Tamara was talking about so he could get a better understanding of her power in order to give Tamara the best thing she could do.

A constrictor. She didn’t think that made him one hundred percent harmless but she was certainly glad to hear he couldn’t poison her. At least now she knew that, unless she kept it from wrapping itself around her, she was fine. She watched as Seiji put it in the tank. The snake didn’t seem interested in staying in there however. She could see the head peeking through the top. It wasn’t moving more than that however so she forced herself to ignore the snake and focus on the young man in front of her.

It helped that he tried to bring her back to the reason of her being here. “Yes, I was,” she said as she approached his desk. “From what I understand, she can turn objects back to sand when they have some as a material. Or something like that. I don’t know the exact details...” Clearly, that wouldn’t be her job. It was important for her to know who she should keep an eye on and perhaps the name of their abilities but she rarely bothered in learning every detail of them. She might not even be the best placed to talk of her power!

She took a seat on the other side of the desk and looked straight at Seiji. “Look, she’s terrified. She’s certain that she can turn people into sand too. She doesn’t want to meet anyone, in case something happens.” Tamara didn’t worry so much for every student under their care but she didn’t want this girl to spend the rest of her life in her room. “I don’t get powers so well but you must. Can’t you go and tell her she’ll be fine and only needs to train and then she might not turn everything into sand anymore?”

Seiji gave Leevi a look but the snake retorted with that he was still in the cage and that he was just looking. He was not going to argue it out with the reptile right now when he had actual work to focus on. He could get back to his food later, and for now he was already pulling up folders and files as the woman spoke of why she was here. Seiji was happy that the program allowed him to search for someone other ways then just their name and student ID number. When she said the girl’s power, he was able to get it down to a few students and with information on the girl staying in her room, that of course made her easy to find.

Trainers and staff were allowed to red flag a student and had to report in when a student was not showing up for class. So in no time at all he found who Tamara was talking about and already reading a bit of the details of her power. "I can see them here. Would you like to see?" Seiji asked, willing to show her if she wanted to take a look. Of course there were certain things he could not show her but details on someone’s power was readily available for the staff if they made a request or just had high enough access on the database. Seiji had his full attention on Tamara when she sat down, clearly worried about her student, which touch Seiji's heart.

It was always good to see a staff member that cared so much, even if most of them did. Teenagers just had that whole issue with authority that made them blind to how much the people that worked at the school cared for them. "Well, you could assure her that she does not have to worry about turning any person into sand. Her biggest concern would be glass, if anything." Seiji said as he started to think of the things that she could possibly end up breaking or had to be worried about. "I can, did you want me to tell her now?" Seiji said with a smile that quickly faded when he asked his last bit on if she wanted him to tell her now. He was still not so good at talking to people, but if it was to help out, he would give it his best shot.

Tamara knew she might let him eat. Nothing prevented him from doing that while checking on his computer for this girl and listening to her. Tamara wouldn’t mind. He too needed to eat and it would not affect his professionalism, not if he could also help her out. It wasn’t like she asked him to come straight away, although she was not against that. For now, he could eat.

Except he didn’t want to, he was working on this case she just gave him. She shook her head as he asked if she wanted to read. “I can access her file too,” she assured him. Maybe not all of it, but she had access to enough information about the girl’s power. She already knew most of what was written on it, since she was notified every time a trainer or teacher sent a red flag. She then had to see where that student ran off. “Look, she doesn’t need more problems. It’s not a detention on top of everything else that will make it better, she needs reassurance. And I can’t give her that,” she told him. It was not like she was skipping classes because she thought it was dumb or had something better to do. She shouldn’t be punished but if Tamara was to see more red flags in her file, it might just happen. Surely Seiji didn’t want that either. She didn’t know the man but you don’t work on helping people when you thought all they needed was punishment.

If you asked her, Tamara wouldn’t easily admit caring so much for the students here. She gave them a bit of tough love, really. But the fact remained that she did care in the end. At least enough for not wanting to make a girl pay for being afraid. She wouldn’t have minded kicking her out of her room and giving her hours of detention if she did it only because of her attitude but it was not the case and so, she wanted to help. The fact she didn’t have her son with him sure had her want to protect some of the kids here a little more than her job required.

“That’s what I told her,” she replied as Seiji assured her the girl was harmless to people. “We’ve taken away most of the glass objects in her dorm for that matter but she’s new to her power and I don’t think she understands it.” The fact that Tamara had little patience when explaining something did not help either. When Seiji’s smile faded, she thought it was because he was hungry and not because of some lack of social skills. She’d rather it to be done quickly but she figured she could let him eat. “Well, I caught your during your lunch hour, it seems. It’s not like we have to be there this very instant, nothing bad will come if I let you eat first. But I was hoping you’d talk to her today. The sooner she accepts who she is, the sooner she can get out and the trainers can help her.”

Now was not the time for eating, it was the time of focusing on work and trying to help out the student and the woman...who he didn't actually know the name of. By her coming here about a student staying stuck in the dorms he figured she had to be in the housing staff, but that was just a guess. He needed at least a name to go with the face that he was pretty sure he had seen around before. How could you miss someone who looked like her? You could not, but you could still know nothing about them, and that was why Seiji was looking at her for a moment.

“I never caught your name.” Seiji said and then started to blush a little. There was a more polite way of saying that, but what was done was done. He was already moving on to what she said next about how she had access and how the girl didn’t need more problems. Seiji had not meant to suggest that she was going to get into any trouble or anything like that. He was just trying to figure it all out and what it was this woman wanted him to do. He was used to students either being forced here or showing up on their own. She wanted the girl to have reassurance, which Seiji felt like was something he could do once he figured out what to actually say.

“Alright, I think I understand now. You have told her everything is fine, even done what you could on her part so she did not have to worry about turning things into sand, but she still is fearful of what she might do. Obviously showing she does not have a fully understanding of her power and has trust issues if she would not believe what an adult would say.” Seiji said and then paused for a moment. Would the girl listen to him just because of his title or would they still have the same problem? He quickly was shaking his head no when she brought up his lunch. Seiji stood up then, wrapping up his sandwich and going to put it back in his mini fridge.

“I’m actually late on my lunch break and a student is a bit more important them just one meal. I can go with you right now to talk to her.” Seiji assured her as he grabbed his lab coat and slipped it on, just to show his position in the form of attire in hopes it would help the girl believe a bit more. He then walked over to Leevi and hesitated for a moment as he looked at Tamara. “I’ll be right behind you.” Seiji said, figuring it would be best if she turned to leave so he could hide Leevi on his person. He could not leave the snake here and he always had his snake on his person or at least in the area where he was. Still, with how she acted, he figured it was best to not tell her that and just hide the reptile.

Tamara was not necessarily the best with names either. She recalled those of the students and staff members she had to deal with the most. The others, she might have heard their name and perhaps vaguely recall who they were but she tended to pay little attention. To choose, she preferred to focus on those she had to watch over or talk to because of her job than try and remember everyone only to forget them all. Seiji however, she’ll remember now. Not only because it was an unusual name but because she was currently talking to him and he agreed to help. It meant she could put him in her list of people she can ask for help if needed be. Not that she often did that but there were situations that required more skills than she had.

Was she surprised he didn’t know her name? Perhaps, a little, but it was mostly because she realised no introduction had been made. “It’s Tamara. I’m watching over the dorms,” she explained to Seiji with a brief nod as she told him her job. She knew it was not the kind of job you’d be most proud of and she certainly was not, but she was also not ashamed of it. She was not one to like lots of responsibilities and she was just fine with this. She didn't want to be the one assigning the rooms just to have a bunch of students complaining about the bad pairing or be in charge of her department to hear the staff whine. She should know, she did that once or twice.

Sure, sometimes, there was a girl who made it difficult by refusing to go out of her room. They didn’t seem to realise that, no matter why it was happening, it hurt them and not her. She couldn’t care less if they refused to move out of their room, they were the ones who’ll have to deal with the consequences. Still, Tamara would rather not add detention and a warning to this girl’s file over the fear pretty much every new student has when they arrived here.

She nodded a few times as Seiji summed up the situation. “Many of them are in that state when they arrive no? I tried to take away everything that could be made of sand. I mean, other than the windows, obviously... I tried to talk to her but I can’t say that I know the fear of hurting people. My power doesn’t exactly do that and saying it can harm me is not the same.” There was some judgement in the last statement. Teenagers! They always thought they were the only ones who lived something, like the adults couldn’t have before them, or it was so long ago or not the same thing so they shouldn’t talk. Maybe the fact Seiji was younger could play in his favor? Or the fact he was a guy. Who knows, she might prefer to hear it from a cute guy than an old doctor.

Seiji objected the student was more important than his food. “Sure, but I don’t want you to start feeling bad because you didn’t eat,” she pointed out, especially after he said he was late on his lunch break. But he was already getting ready to meet the girl so she stood up as well. Yet he seemed to stop and tell her he’d be right behind her. “She’s in the girl-only dorm. You can still eat something real quick before joining me back there, it’s fine,” she assured him. Obviously, he wanted to finish something so she turned her back at him and left his office, ready to walk back to the south wing then.

"Oh, okay I knew you looked familiar. It's nice to official meet you Miss Tamara. Or would you just prefer Tamara?" Seiji asked, wanted to be sure he referred to her in the right way. He was all about using his manners and while he was an adult and also a staff member, he still had respect for those around him no matter their position or age. He would even call a student Miss or Mr., if that was what they desired. Of course he would not be as willing to do what a student told him to do as he would if a staff member did, but the basic concept was there.

Seiji personally knew that he liked students but he could not see himself being a person in charge of them in terms of the dorms. One he hardly could interact with a large group of people without some difficultly or needing to be with a group to not have as big of an issue. Having to deal with hormonal teenagers, people who didn't always want to listen to you, and then of course that bunch that didn't want to follow the rules. It would just be too much stress for Seiji, and he had a lot of respect for Tamara taking on such a job. "Very true, that's why I hope that one of my projects ends up being a success." Seiji said as he gave a hopeful smile.

"I get what you mean. I just hope that I am able to help with the situation so you do not have to keep dealing with a student to scared to leave their room. If she stays in there forever then she will miss out on training and wellbeing a normal teenager other than the powers." Seiji responded back, knowing that they had to do something. He was still not very confident he would be of any use but he was going to give it his best. He was certain that he could wait a little until he would eat; it was not like he had not gone a day or two without food before.

He gave a nod when she told him where she could be and waited for her to head out before he hid Leevi on his person and headed to the girls dorm. "I'm here, lead the way." Seiji said as he walked up to Tamara. Expecting to follow her to the girl’s room. He was already feeling a little weird, like he was breaking some rule being in the girls only dorm and he was a guy.

“You can go for Tamara. I leave the ‘Miss Sulik’ to the students. Not that they say it a lot...” she answered as he asked how she wanted to be called. Now, however, she wondered if Seiji would rather her to call him Mister Lockard or if she could go with his first name. In doubt, she might just call him Lockard. It wasn’t like she figured they would go out and have a drink after this, they probably didn’t need to be all familiar with each other.

Unlike Seiji, Tamara had no problem forcing her authority on people. In fact, she tended to have a problem with those trying to boss her around. She knew she was not in charge but she needed space to do things her way and not feel like she was some sort of servant doing someone else’s business. She knew she had a lot of restrictions in her job and people telling her to do this or that, mostly watching over a student, but they still left her enough room to do it as she pleased. And she had time off to get away when she felt the need to run away from the school. It was not because of the attitude people had, she was made that way. She often felt the need to leave the moment she started to grow roots. So far, she resisted that urge. She knew she had the grow up and be an adult and that included not leaving town after a few months.

“One of your projects?” Not that she would mind if he’d rather keep it to himself, but he mentioned it and she wondered what this young man might have in mind. At his age, Tamara’s projects were usually along the kind of enjoying the adult life while trying to avoid the responsibilities, something she couldn’t always do since she had a kid.

“It’s mostly that I don’t want to call the security and have the administration know about this. She’s in no state to realise she is getting more in trouble locking herself in her room than actually getting out of it.” If Tamara had no remorse writing on a student file they did some shenanigan, she would rather avoid doing it when the person didn’t mean to. Some people deserved to be punished for what they did, others punished themselves enough already. “You know powers better than I do. Maybe a more scientific approach will convince her.” Although a scientific approach given by a boy who barely seemed out of college, if he was, might not work so well. They shall see.

Tamara waited for Seiji in the south wing and once he arrived, he walked him to the girl’s room. She saw nothing wrong in bringing Seiji with her there. He was a staff member, it was not the same thing as if she escorted a boy in a girl’s room. “Her name’s Leah,” she told him once they arrived and she knocked at the door to warn the girl. “Leah, I’ve got someone to help you with your problems. You can talk to him.” She told her as they entered the room. Hey, if the girl refused to go to the mountain, tamara decided to bring the mountain to her.

"Alright, Tamara." Seiji responded back as he could not help but to smile. Was it odd that he felt like he just made a friend from being able to call her by her first name? Probably so, since he figured that after helping her with this problem he would likely not see her again until she had another problem. He was used to that sort of life by now, she he supposed it was not all that big of a deal at the end of the day. At least he was able to help people and that kept him relatively happy most days. At her question he nodded his head a few times, mainly to make sure that he was allowed to tell her wanted he wanted to talk about.

"One of the big ones is a test to see if someone will be a mutant or not. We have a test that confirms if someone is a mutant, but that only works so far on people who have already come into their mutation. I hope to be able to make a test that can be done on a child as soon as they are born that will tell us if they will be a mutant or not. We would be able to dramatically improve getting a hold of students sooner and also keep an eye on them as they are developing." Seiji said, getting excited about it as he talked more. He did stop himself however, not wanting to talk her ear off or bore her about the subject.

He did leave out the bit about how it would also allow them to tell parents in advance if their kid was going to be a mutant or not, which he saw both good and bad to. He understood what she was getting at about not wanting to have to get security and administration involved. That was nice of her. Seiji knew that if he could not handle a student after giving it one try that would be the people he would call as soon as possible. "I understand. I will give it my best." Seiji said, feeling a little bit more confident as she pointed out that a scientific approach might work better. He was still unsure just how much help he could be but she was asking for it so he was going to give it his all.

When they got to the girl's room, Seiji made sure to keep his eyes on Tamara, and hoped he would not see any lady related things on the floor or around the girl's room. He also was praying to every star above that he was not super red at the moment and that Leevi would not try anything. Seiji nodded once more when he was given the girl's name and cleared his throat as he moved into the room. "Umm...hi Leah. I'm Seiji Lockard, the Side-Effect Specialist here at Bellefonte Academy. I was informed of your power and was told that it would be a good idea to come talk to you about it. I can already assure you that staying in your room will do more harm to you in the long run than good. You will miss out on experience regular school life, making friends, and improving on your power." Seiji said, trying his best to be comforting and not use any really large words.

Seiji shared with Tamara one of the big projects he had been working on. She doubted he did so alone, unless he was some sort of genius but somehow, to her, young geniuses had to be more socially awkward than that, kind of like those characters Benedict Cumberbatch liked to play. Seiji was smiling, engaging people and not nervous during conversations. She bet he even knew how to joke. It was hard to think he could be so intelligent as to create a test like that on his own at his age and still be able to look human. “I guess so but isn’t it a perfect way to brand us for the rest of the world too?” Despite the question being legitimate and rather scary considering the possible outcomes, she didn’t seem as terrified of what might happen. She didn’t really care about that test and what repercussions it could have. Well, she might be a little curious, just because it would be nice to know if her son was a mutant, so she could have him around her. It was her biggest wish, even though she knew she was not exactly mother material thus why she sent him to her parents. “Good luck with that test,” she still told him although whether or not she was genuine in her words might be debatable.

Of course, Tamara might have to call the security in the end, but she’d rather try everything before causing the girl more problems. Had she been aggressive and insulting, she wouldn’t have minded so much but she was only afraid, a feeling that was understandable, especially if she knew nothing of mutations before coming here. Not all kids were born of a mutant parent. She nodded, glad that Seiji was seeing her point and not thinking she was just too much trouble and they didn’t have to deal with her like this. It was their job after all and Tamara could not see how punishing her would solve anything.
