NAME: Xiao Mei Ying
NICKNAME: Xia or Mei Mei
AGE: 16
GENDER: Female
ORIENTATION: Pansexual
POSITION: Sainō Transfer Student
FACE CLAIM: Hebe Tian
POWER: Air and Wind Manipulation
Name of Power
Xiao is able to move the air through swift and soft movements of her hands. Bending her wrists sharper, with a pop of her hand outward causes the wind to move faster. A softer movement, allows the air to flow at a gentle breeze. Trained in Tai Chi in her home country, she uses the body movements associated with Tai Chi to control the air at her beckoning, though if she gets excited, stressed, or upset (whether anger or sadness), she will easily lose control of her control over the air. Her power also requires great concentration, seeing as it is her mind that powers most of the strength of her power, rather than her movements. This is due to the fact that Tai Chi only allows for a few fast movements, meaning the strength is powered by her mind, which is a main stem for her headaches.
Limitations
- Her energy drains easily when she uses her power, though it can be improved with training.
- She tires out more so than others if her power is in constant use.
- She cannot manipulate extremely high winds (like those seen in tornado's, hurricane's, and typhoon's.)
- If she doesn't constantly practice her Tai Chi, she can loose her ability to control the air properly.
Side-Effects
- Severe headaches when using power for long or extended periods of time.
- Has mild to severe asthma, triggered by anything from smoke to dust.
- The Tai Chi movements used to control her power puts great pressure and strain on her bones because of the constant holding of certain positions for long periods of time.
- Sometimes prone to severe anxiety when using her power.
APPEARANCE SECTION: While her hair is actually a natural dark brown, it tends to look more of a light brown in the sun, or any kind of lighting. Her eyes are deep brown, making her pupils almost indistinguishable from her irises. While she's by no means short, she's also no that tall, instead sizing up to be about the average height. She has small hands, hands her parents have noted to be perfect for Tai Chi and Kung-Fu. Her feet are small, though not tiny like the ancient days of foot binding. Her feet size up to be somewhere around a seven, a foot size her parents seem to dislike. On the back of her left shoulder she has a small birthmark, that looks oddly like a raindrop if you stare at it long enough.
Xiao has a scar on the back of her right ankle from where she fell as a small child, scratching up her ankle pretty badly. Her smile is rarely fully seen, as she has a mild gap between her teeth, due to this she tends to cover up her mouth if she smiles. While the gap isn't truly that bad, Xiao tends to think of it as being a sign of imperfection, which was a huge no in her family. Her teeth are also slightly crooked on the bottom, making Xiao even more self conscious about her smile.
MUST HAVE APPAREL: Always sporting a necklace with the Buddha sitting upon a lotus flower, Xiao has been known for her sense of style. While her mother is a designer, she only passed on some of her fashion sense onto her daughter. Xiao while, will be fashionable if she wishes, if in the mood, prefers big fluffy sweatshirts that she can cuddle into. She loved jeans that aren't too tight, but yet fit her body well enough. Xiao has a good mixture of both regular walking shoes as wells as an assortment of high heals, and various dress shoes.
PERSONALITY SECTION: Usually Xiao is very focused, growing up in Japan, she was taught to be focused on studies. She's studious, and severely afraid of failure. Her parents installed into her head that she can never fail, or she will be of no more worth. Occasionally flighty, she normally is simply down to earth, and full of life. She has a bad habit of nagging people who don't take their studies seriously. Xiao has said some rude things to fellow students before in her studious rage.
Xiao has a nervous habit of fiddling with her necklace when she's uncomfortable. This can range from anything to taking a test to being a situation that makes her feel less that comfortable. She's also a very animated talker. She'll move her hands about when speaking to another person, in sort of an attempt to, you could say, illustrate what she is saying, or trying to say. Some people find her being an animated talker annoying, however Xiao pays them no mind normally.
As a result of her parents being hard on her for so long about her studies, Xiao has a bad habit of being hard on herself in turn. Telling herself that if she doesn't get the highest marks, or the grades, she becomes upset, causing her boughs of anxiety to flare up. She is also known for studying beyond her limits, causing her body to wear out, for her to become extremely tired. To combat all the side effects that come with her powers, and all the pressures to be the best at all times, she often uses meditation to calm and quiet her mind.
EXTRA QUIRK: Xiao normally wears her hair in a long braid. She has an accent, that tends to get thicker depending on what words she's trying to say, or what she is talking about.
FATHER: Wu Long (40)
MOTHER: Jie Fu Ying (37)
SIBLINGS: Wu Ying (14) and Yue Ying (12)
PET: A cat named Riri
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: N/A
WORTHY MENTIONS: Has best friend in Japan named Misaki Yurashiki.
CHILDHOOD: Born to a Chinese immigrant family in Nishinomiya, Japan, Xiao was enrolled into school at the age of three. Highly gifted, and the oldest of her siblings, she trained every day in Tai Chi and Kung-Fu. While only mediocre at Kung-Fu, she was more than excellent at Tai Chi. Though it would be several years before they would find out why she was so good at it. Xiao studied day in and day out for years, even helping train her younger brother Wu in Kung-Fu. Once her sister Yue got to an older age, she was enrolled into Kung-Fu. The family always went to Wu and Yue's Kung-Fu tournaments, seeing as having family support was very crucial to the success of the family, parents and children included.
Xiao got along for the most part with both of her siblings, though they of course had their moments, like the time Wu tried to drown Xiao's porcelain doll in the bathtub. At that point, she wasn't sure who'd gone more off the wall, Xiao herself, or her mother. Xiao would practice Tai Chi at school, though that's actually where she was taught. However, she much preferred to actually practice on her own. Her place of choice was usually the family courtyard, where she could be surrounded by the assortment of flowers in her mother's garden. She also much preferred this area because there was a large garden statue of Buddha, which brought her peace while practicing.
ADOLESCENCE: Around the time of her eleventh birthday, Xiao was in the court yard of her families home, practicing her Tai Chi, when she noticed a change. The air was moving at her will, though not nearly controlled enough for her to do anything with it. However nonetheless, it was moving. She kept it a secret, not wanting her family to believe she was crazy, or a freak. However, in her solitary practice sessions, she would play with the wind, gradually finding out she could make leaves float off of the ground, make them swirl in small vortexes of air.
Within two weeks of her discovering for herself that she could control the air at her will, representatives for a special school called Sainō were at her door, asking to speak with her parents, as well as with Xiao. They had a sit down in the family room. Her parents sent her siblings Wu and Yue from the room, much to their dismay. Xiao sat and listened as her parents were told that she had the power to manipulate the air using her Tai Chi. They spoke of taking her to a school, where she could learn to control her powers, to use them properly. Her parents were upset, yet at the same time, they understood, as long as they were able to see their daughter for some of the holidays. Begrudgingly, they let her go with them to the school. Xiao packed up her things, giving hugs to her brother and sister, who she had barely gotten to know, seeing as they were younger than herself. She promised to visit when she could.
At Sainō, the first few years were tough for Xiao. She didn't know how to handle the change. From going to a normal school, to one where she was surrounded by people who were like her, they had powers. Xiao focused on her studies, opting to try to make friends when she was finally used to the school. In her third year at Sainō, she made friends with that of Misaki Yurashiki who was a shape shifter, and was in most of her classes. This allowed for Xiao to open back up, eventually becoming comfortable with not only the school, but with herself again as well. When Xiao turned sixteen, she announced that she would be going to Bellefonte Academy as an international exchange student. She had prepared by spending her third, fourth, and fifth years at Sainō learning English. While she speaks it well enough, she does have a heavy accent at times, making her hard to understand.
ADULTHOOD: She isn't an adult yet.
SAMPLE: Nishinomiya was rainy that day, dark, damp, and god knows overly wet. Her parents had taken the family out to the city's local Buddhist temple to pray for her safe travels. In less than a days time, she would board a plane, heading overseas to the great Bellefonte Academy. Xiao was quite nervous, as she had spent the last half of the car ride back to the family home, fiddling with the necklace around her neck. Her brother and sister, both seated on either side of her, simply stayed quiet, not sure what to say to their sister. She had always gone to Sainō, meaning she could easily come home for holidays, however, this time it would not be so easy. She would be thousands of miles away from home, from her family. Xiao would not be able to just get up and come home for the Christmas holidays or whatever she felt.
Xiao felt slightly guilty for doing this to her family. For not telling them that she had been studying English, to prepare for this trip. However, she felt she had learned all that she could at Sainō, feeling it better for her to travel to another school thousands of miles away, to gain more knowledge about her powers. After all, she could just write home sometimes, that way her family knew she was okay. Xiao continued to fiddle with her necklace. She'd never been on a plane before, and her nerves were getting the best of her. She thought of the school she was going to, what if no one liked her, what if it was a sheer repeat of her first three years of school at Sainō, where she not one friend. Would she be able to make friends? What if she was unable to do the work at her school? What if she failed? Almost as if her brother knew she was inwardly freaking out, as well as beating herself up with thoughts of failure, he gave her hand a small squeeze. Xiao breathed out, a small smile on her face.
She was sure going to miss her siblings comforting words and embraces while she was gone. As well as her families overwhelming support, despite the fact that she rather stubborn at times. She was going to miss it all so much. However she knew it would be okay in the end, as least she hoped so.
