Snow Leopard Mutation
Gabriel's mutation has adapted his body to, in some areas, mimic the appearance of the leopard. His back, from shoulder to hip is tinted a downy white, which fades as it rounds towards his chest, and covered in black and brown leopard spots. His skin remains as such, and even though it takes on the appearance of a leopard's coat, it is not fur. A similar addition to his human physiology is the 1.1 metre tail growing from the base of his spinal cord. Much like any of his other appendage, Gabriel can control the movements of his tail.
Physical appearances aside, his leopard mutation has affected Gabe's sensory capabilities and natural instincts. He has a leopard's sense of sight and smell, as well as increased agility and sense of balance. Rather than human, in terms of instincts and sensory capabilities, Gabriel is entirely leopard. Not only that, he always tends to land on his feet.
Limitations
- He is unable to retract his tail or hide his spots, and so his mutation is constantly on display, putting him at risk.
- Strong smells or bright lights can incapacitate him at worst, and stun or seriously offend him at best, due to his enhanced senses.
- He can become easily distracted and is often restless
Side-Effects
- He commonly suffers 'bloodlust' and meat cravings reminiscent of that of a large cat, and similarly also has difficult consuming vegetables. His body structure requires larger intakes of red meat than the average human male
- His personality has also adapted to the cat mutation, heightening some of his more negative emotions such as anger and possessiveness, very reminiscent of a cat.
- He also requires more sleep than the average human, approximately ten hours in a day.
- The spots on his back can cause itching and rashes around the area, though very rarely on the spots themselves.
- His tail, as an additional appendage on an otherwise human skeleton, causes him joint stiffness and pain, particularly on cold days or when he is already injured.
Due to his rather visible mutations, Gabriel is almost always wearing baggy pants that can hide his tail. Thankfully, regular t-shirts are easily capable of hiding his spotted back, and so his dress-code is a little freer. He is actually quite fond of open collar shirts, most because it allows him to display the wooden tag with an ingrained ink tattoo of a climbing rose, a birthday present from Everett on his thirteenth birthday. Despite his relationship with his brother, he never takes the necklace off.
Gabriel stands at approximately 6", with the same slim frame and broad shoulders as his brother. His hair is darker, ranging between dark brown and dirty blonde depending on his recent levels of sun exposure. Customarily he doesn't bother fiddling with it, and only cuts it when it gets in his way. Because of this, it usually remains long enough to touch the base of his neck, and sweep into his eyes in a rather messy fashion. His eyes are grey-blue in colour, though tend to darken or lighten by themselves at random. His most noticeable features are his tail, and the leopard spots decorating his back like an organic tattoo.
Empathetic. Loyal. Playful. Rash.
Gabriel is constantly looking outwards, towards people other than himself. He's always been able to empathize with the plights of others, and instinctively gravitates towards those in need. Because of this however, he can often find it difficult to create meaningful connections with sole individuals, since he becomes wrapped up in helping the collective. This was seen even within his relationship with his parents, where Gabriel was so consumed in trying to make life easier for them, he distanced himself from them, and his brother. He often misses out on opportunities because of this.
Just with his empathy, Gabriel is incredibly loyal, both to himself and to those he decides to help. He has never been afraid to openly display his own emotions and thoughts. Similarly, once he has chosen an individual, he would never refrain from displaying the loyalty he has decided to bestow upon them. Incredibly picky in who he actually helps, in comparison to whom he empathizes with, Gabriel would never be ashamed to serenade his choices. On the other hand, this same loyalty is also manifested in his stubbornness, and his other negative emotions. His constant hatred of Everett, even after years apart, is the most significant display of his emotional loyalty.
Due to his mutation, Gabriel has adopted many cat-like personality traits. His attitude seems to jump around rather sporadically, and he can range from sadistic to playful in the space of five minutes. He is both possessive and protective of his 'friends', and can be rash in his intentions to both help and protect them. Similar to his brother, Gabe can become impulsive in the heat of the moment. Traditionally though, his level head and somewhat distant personality allows him to make rational decisions based on the situation.
FATHER: Thomason King
MOTHER: Jennifer King
SIBLINGS: Everett Johnson King
Gabriel was born into poverty, joining a family of three. His brother, Everett, was two years older than him at the time, and from his birth took a chief role in Gabe's upbringing. The boys had little but each other, and for children who had never known anything else, they were content. With both of their parents working two jobs, Gabriel was mostly raised by his older brother. For a long time they remained like-minded and close, both trying to make life as easy as possible for their parents, and for each other.
Gabriel was always a loyal empathetic soul, he saw outwards when Everett looked to himself. For that reason, he was always more sympathetic towards his parents, and to the plights of others around him, when it was easier to ignore his own. It was for that reason that when his parents revealed they'd scraped enough money together for Everett to go to the local school, he reacted with bitterness. His parents could have spent that money on themselves, or on fixing up their house, but instead it went to Everett, who repaid them with his laziness. To Gabe, this was both incomprehensible and ludicrous, for Everett not to understand the gift he had been given. It was made even worse, when Ever's mutant blood made itself known. Once again his brother was given a gift that he could use to help his parents, and instead he hid it. Feared it.
The relationship between the brothers was becoming dangerously fragile by the time Everett attempted to cook. That one incident destroyed it entirely
When Everett burned down their family's meager kitchen, Gabriel could barely believe it. They're food, what limited utensils they had, gone in a fit of his brother's curiosity. He had always been impulsive like that, and finally Gabriel was driven over the edge. He jumped at his brother, pushing him down and hit him with a kind of uncontrolled fury he hadn't known he'd possessed. Just as he'd known he would, Everett didn't fight back, and so Gabe attacked his older brother until the last of his anger had faded to a simmering pool that he left to fester. Everett's nose had been broken, as had one of his ribs.
After Everett graduated, which was a complete surprise to Gabriel, he simply disappeared. It may have been partly Gabe's fault, since he'd taken to ignoring his brother unless he was delivering insults or beatings. Everett for his part, did the same.
They're fights had become increasingly more violent, or at least on Gabriel's part they had. Everett, for his first, never fault back against his kicks, punches, or the guilt trips he sent with them. Over time, he forgot what his older, subservient brother looked like without bruises. With Everett's own passive nature, and Gabe's desire to please their parents, he quickly learned to aim his blows low, and that no matter what, neither brother would mention it for their own reasons. At that point, he didn't even know if his brother was deserving of such treatment. All he knew was that he was constantly angry, and Everett was always there to be the reason 'why'. What he didn't know at the time, was that these were the first signs of his awakening mutant power.
His brother left when Gabriel was sixteen. It was the same year Gabriel's own mutation showed itself, and the year his mother died. It was simply the shortened lifespan that poverty pushed onto her, coupled with the loss of her first son. Shortly after, Gabe was forced to put his father into a home.
His mutation was gradual in its development. It began with a slight discoloration on his back, which soon darkened. Eventually they resembled the spots found on a leopard's back, and they covered his entire back, from shoulders to hip. At around the same time, a small lump at the base of his spine was elongating, painfully, and eventually flared out entirely into a leopard tail. Left to deal with it alone, Gabriel was lost in his pain and fear. He had some understanding as to what was going on, because of his brother and parents, but it was still frightening for the young man.
Understandably, something like that proved difficult to hide. Unable to direct his anger at Ever, the absolutely betrayal he felt that his brother had run away from his responsibility and duty to his family, Gabriel turned to other individuals he could take his anger out on. He was almost constantly in fights, and on one such occasion, his shirt was torn and his back revealed. After that scene, agents arrived on his doorstep merely a few days later, unfortunately, Gabriel made the mistake of assuming they were agents from Bellefonte and went with them willingly.
The two men, rather than taking him to Bellefonte, bundled the young boy into the back of a van and drove away. With such a visible mutation, it was inevitable that he had been discovered by people curious about mutants. He was lucky enough that so unheard of in that time, that very few people believed in their existence. It was the people that he had fought with previously that had captured him and reported him to a small scientific platform on the outskirts of town for a good amount of money, and their silence.
Gabriel remained a prisoner at the facility for six months, posing as a secret experiment for the scientists working these. As a daily occurrence he was prodded and abused, losing precious blood for their samples and being starved to measure his survival mechanisms and immune system.
Gabriel was a submissive creature by nature, and while he was discontented with his situation, he accepted it as his lot in life and settled down for the long haul. Of course, if an opportunity for escape presented itself he would take it, and fortunately, after six months his savior appeared and set the factory on fire. Gabe learned later that the man was a recruiter for Bellefonte Academy who had been quietly investigating rumours in the area for some time. With his help Gabriel escaped, and watched the factory burn, his dna and the scientists with it.
He was given a brief week for recovery before the recruiter proposed a tuition for him. He was informed of his distinct lack of options, and then shown the possible schools he could attend. Knowing exactly where Everett had gone, Gabriel chose the farthest away, the most remote. The academy in Australia. He had nothing tying him to his old home, and far too many things to leave behind.
The complete opposite of Everett, even with no real family to work for, Gabriel dedicated his time to studying and helping others. He graduated near the top of the class at nineteen, through hard work rather than natural talent.
A few years later, after college, he returned to the school as an English teacher and has been working there for a year. During his time, he picked up a slight Australia accent that he isn't aware of. Gabe was chosen as a teacher chaperon to accompany his students for the IMAC event being held at Bellefonte. He is currently unaware that his brother continues to work there.
But of how fun that will be to find out.
