RYKER JOHNSON MEDLEY
TWENTY-FOUR//MALE//HETEROSEXUAL//WING MUTATION//PET RESCUE OWNER//WADE POEZYN
POWER:
Ryker's power comes in the form of a mutation. Actually, it manifests in the form of sixteen foot bird wings. The wings themselves closely resemble the pattern and shape of a Wedge-tail Eagle, dappled brown with black tints and shot through with silver highlights. They are quite broad, built for power in order to actually elevate him and keep him in the air, in this way he lacks any great forms of speed while flying straight away. The speeds that he can reach (averaging around 65-75 km/h) must be built up as he gains leverage.
These wings would be cumbersome to keep out and about all the time, and as a solution to this, Ryker has the ability to retract his wings into his back until they have completely disappeared. In place of this are two scars which run the entire length of his back in a V shape, meeting at the small of his back, starting at his shoulder blades.
Both retracting and expanding his wings is painful for Ryker, as he is literally absorbing a piece of himself into himself. His skin tears (explaining the scars) and the wings either fold into themselves or into his flesh, or unfold out of his back. Once his wings are out they are pretty cumbersome until he is actually flying. However he is quite an adept flyer, once he is in the sky. Needless to say, it is easier for him to fly jumping off a cliff or some other height with gained altitude, however it is possible for him take off from a running or standing start. It simply takes more work.
He can fly as an estimation for seventeen hours before dropping out of the sky in exhaustion, this is at the slower speeds of 35-45 km/h. He can increase this time by catching warmer air currents and riding them, however he often avoids this since he can't actually direct where he is going all of the time.
Apart from the actual appearance of his wings, the constitution and development of Ryker's body is also unique. Due to the strain of flight his body has developed and maintained extra muscle, predominately around his shoulders, back, neck and pectorals. Similarly through the constant use of his added appendages, he has retained this muscle even when his wings are retracted.
Ryker's body and constitution have also taken on a more avian-like form. He has air sacs attached to his lungs, like that of a bird. These air sacks, as well as having lighter (and in some cases hollow) bones allow Ryker to move faster and altogether remain airborne when flying. The extra ability to take in more oxygen than the average human also allows him to hold his breathe for longer, as well as increasing his stamina and respiratory functions.
Ryker....well let me think.
He's tall, standing at around 6'2" with a thin, muscular form. He's something of a fitness fanatic, and has the definition to prove it. He has short, brown hair with a certain 'poofiness' to its volume (that takes longer to achieve than he'd care to admit). While he is against all out beards or mustaches ('If you can't see his face, don't trust him - personal philosophy) most of the time he is too lazy to actually shave properly, and sports dark stubble.
His eyes are a light iceberg green, an unusual colour that usually draws more attention than any of his other features (apart from his wings of course). His skin is naturally a creamy white, but his constant outdoor activity has resulted in a golden-brown tan. His wings are broad and mainly the colour of melted milk chocolate. The top of his wings, as well as the outer rims of his primaries are a darker shade, almost black. The rest of his feathers are a lighter dapple of browns, with silver highlights shot through. On his back whether his wings are out or not, he features a long V shaped scar that stretches from his shoulder blades to the bottom of his back.
Most of the time Ryker wears only cheap t-shirts and either baggy jeans or shirts. This is for two reasons, the first because of his constant work around animals - his clothes are either small or dirty. The second is his mutant ability, as unless he is topless, growing wings tends to tear his shirts to shreds.
Born with the natural laughter of the Romani, Ryker was an entertainer from the start. He couldn't focus on anything for long periods of time, he lived for laughter in comparison to his more down to earth brother. It was only after Gabriel's 'death' that Ryker's personality really changed and he grew up. He took on Gabriel's work ethic, aiming all of his energy and determination into worthwhile activities to help others. He always did everything with a smile, but only for the benefit of others. Ever since Gabriel died, Ryker never gave a real smile again. Although he still enjoys making others laugh, he finds that he cannot bring the same joy to himself.
Ryker can be rash and hasty when a friend is in harms way, his love for them impairing his judgement. This is a resurfacing of his old, flighty personality. However, the rest of the time he is quiet and thoughtful, thinking out every possible solution before taking the best course of action. He no longer minds death if he were to die for someone else, yet to die for himself seems selfish and wasteful.
Ryker really knows how to hold a grudge and can usually stay angry for quite some time. If you want forgiveness, you've got to earn it. He treats honor and loyalty both in very high regard. He's always up for a challenge or a fight, never backing out of something once he's agreed to it. As long as it doesn't endanger any of his friends, Ryker has no qualms about risking his own life, even for foolish matters. He loves to have fun, to try and get a real smile back on his face.
He is light and positive by nature. Even in dim situations, he is always looking at the positive side of things. He is definitely the 'glass half full' kind of person and can never really be beat down by anything, save for death. Despite his positive nature, when it's time to get serious, he is more than capable of sobering down. Despite his seemingly light personality, he sometimes takes too much responsibility onto himself, mostly when it comes to others. His theory is 'I can't cry, because everyone else does' and so he keeps all of his emotions locked inside.
FATHER: Cole Medley [Alive]
MOTHER: Melody Medley [?]
BROTHER: Gabriel Medley [Declared Dead]
Rykerwas born as the second son in a pair of twins to a Romani family in America. Nothing in life came easy, and nothing that was given was worth having. That was what his father told him and Gabriel, every single day. Their mother Melody was a much gentler soul, being flighty and quiet in everything she did, just like a bird. This must have rang true, for when Gabriel and Ryker were four she drifted away and never looked back.
They were constantly on the move, and had no real home. From a young age they were submersed in the arts and music, surrounded by family and friends. Cole himself was the decreed 'father' of their tribe, and took responsibility for every member.
Cole wasn't exactly a 'family man', he was distant at best, focusing all of his intentions on his work, rather than the importance of his two singular sons. Ryk and Gabe didn't mind though, both were rather solitary by nature and they found plenty of ways to entertain themselves with the lack of parental supervision. The twins got up to no end of mischief, basically making complete nuisances of themselves until they were roughly the age of twelve, when their powers began showing themselves
Ryker's was more obvious. He suffered frequent nightmares, most often about being attacked by dark birds, or of himself sprouting giant bird wings. When he awoke, his bed sheets were littered with long bird feathers, though there was no trace to where they had actually come from. These nightmares continued for approximately two months before his wings appeared in full form during the day, while Ryk was fully conscious. He was playing hide and seek with his brother on the plateau above their home. It was a weak after heavy rains, and while the ground was now dry, the edges were weak. Ryker found the perfect hiding place behind the tall rocks near the back of the plain. While he hid the ground caved and collapsed, and Ryker fell.
All sense disappeared and survival instinct kicked in, his back tore open and he sprouted wings. The acute pain of actually sprouting these wings for the first time and ripping his back knocked Ryker more or less unsconcious, and it was only his bodies survival instinct that flew him back up to solid ground and landed. Ryker fell fully unconscious as soon as he fell, his wings still fully in view. Gabriel rush to get help, and in their own time Ryker's wings disappeared back into his back, leaving two ugly wounds.
Moving out of his old home and away from his brother was the hardest part, as the twins had never been separated before. But Ryker had been recruited, and his brother showed no signs of mutation. Moving from the nomad life to a set and strict school regime was difficult for Ryker, especially without his brother's support. He didn't have long to struggle alone however, as no more than six months later, Gabriel arrived with powers of his own.
At eighteen, both boys were ready enough to move out of the academy and into the world alone. Both boys however, were forbidden to leave until in the eyes of their father, they had earned it. He was very demanding when it came to his two sons, having high standards for the both of them. Gabriel rose to the challenge, whilst the more apathetic Ryker couldn't care less where he lived. As long as he had food, his wings (which he had quickly come to love) and an instrument to play music with, he didn't care where he was.
Proud of the one son that was trying to prove himself, Cole perhaps set the standards too high and sent Gabriel off on his own into the world. Ryker was fuzzy on the details of what it was exactly that Cole had sent his son to do. He never had any mind to ask, until Gabriel didn't come back. Ryk and Cole waited for months with waning hope, but Gabe never came back. Just like that, Gabriel was pronounced dead and Ryk lost his other half. He didn't even know where he had gone, or why. It seemed completely unprecedented that he was dead. But if Gabe had been alive, he would have come home to Ryker, of that he was certain of.
In memory of his brother, Ryker began to take on more of his teachings. He stopped lazing around laughing at everything, becoming more solemn and serious in his day-to-day activities. He wasn't trying to prove anything, simply trying to keep his brother alive within himself, yet Cole noticed his progress with approval. Where Ryker had been a laughing joker that had never grown up, he was now like Gabriel, much more serious. That wasn't to say he changed completely, it would be impossible to change his whole personality, but Ryker's light heart had been darkened by grief. When he smiled it looked real, but it was for the benefit of others, more so than because he truly felt like it. In truth, the last time he smiled for real, because he was happy, was before Gabriel left. Now his face is a false mask, and he is a fake.
He left the academy as soon as he could, and found solace away from people. He began taking in strays off the street, even though he didn't even have a proper home for himself outside the dorms. The stray animals reminded him of himself, with a part of them lost, and while he had no motivation to save himself, he was driven to try and save animals - those who did not know any better. With financial support (albeit given grudgingly) from his father, Ryker established a run-down factory and slowly began to turn it into an animal sanctuary. He started an adoption agency and began working to find homes for his friends, and all those that he found on the street. Perhaps it was his mutation, or the likeness in which they had been abandoned, but Ryk felt a kinship with all animals, and he believes he has found his final calling in life.
