NAME: Porter Amos Wood
NICKNAME: N/A
AGE: 17
GENDER: Male
ORIENTATION: Heterosexual
POSITION: BA Student
FACE CLAIM: Taylor Lautner
POWER:
Psychometry
Porter has the ability to understand the life story of an object by coming into contact with it. When touching a specific object, he is able to read the "memory" of the thing in question. He will see who has been with it, what it has been through, who created it, how old it is, etc, as sort of a quick movie inside of his head.
Limitations
.only works for inanimate objects; he cannot read the history of sentient things like animals and people
.only works if he is in physical contact with the object in question; he must be touching the baseball to read the baseball's history
.objects that are older or who have been handled and loved by people longer have a stronger psychic impact; those that are newly made or ignored are harder to read
.he's unable to turn his power off and on or strengthen it in anyway; he gets the memories he gets off of things and that is that; however, with time, he may be better able to withstand stronger memories or make sense of confusing ones
.memories suck him out of the present moment entirely and may last anywhere from a second to five minutes; during that time, he is vulnerable and unable to sense anything around him
Side-Effects
.headaches that increase in severity the more information he gleans from objects
.confusion, after reading an object, about where he is and what time it is, including year, month, day, or hour depending on the history of the object
.exhaustion after reading multiple objects or a particularly intense object
.trouble seeing inanimate objects as inanimate; tends to personify everything as if it has emotions and thoughts
.touch aversion to new things; tends to be jumpy in cluttered/new environments
APPEARANCE SECTION: Porter is about 5'11" and weighs around 170lbs. His build is decidedly athletic. He spends his time lifting hay bales and lugging water buckets, that doesn't lend itself to any other frame. His hair is a dark brown and he usually keeps it cut fairly short. He doesn't have to deal with it getting in the way, even though he has been told he looks good with long hair. His eyes are brown as well and his eyebrows are dark, like his hair. His lips are often curved in a smile and occasionally, on days where he is in a rush, he gets a bit stubbly around the lip and chin.
Porter dresses himself pretty simply. He's a fan of t-shirts and button downs depending on the weather. When he's at the farm by himself in the summer, sometimes he just prefers to ride without any shirt at all. Usually he's wearing jodhpurs or breeches, since he's often just coming from or just about to go to the farm and ride. If not, he also owns jeans or khaki shorts that he'll occasionally wear. All his clothes are usually in pretty worn condition. He doesn't see the need to buy new shirts and breeches until the others are unusable.
MUST HAVE APPAREL: Jodhpurs might as well be an essential for Porter, considering how much he rides horses. In addition, he often walks around in his farm boots, the same ones he uses for riding. Sometimes he still has spurs on. But he rarely wears other shoes, even in the summer. Wearing open toed shoes around a horse farm is just not smart.
PERSONALITY SECTION: Porter isn't the talkative type. He isn't the bubbly type, either. But that doesn't mean he's the unkind type. He's very quiet. He uses as few words as possible and his voice is very soft. He sounds like he's been talking to skittish horses all his life. He doesn't approach people often, but when he does, it's with a very specific goal in mind. He doesn't like to get muddled up in lying to himself or other people.
He's got a world view that is very black and white. You're either moral or you're not and that's the end of it. There's not a lot of gray area for Porter. That doesn't mean he's particularly religious (although he's pretty deeply spiritual in a certain sense). He just has a clear idea of good and bad and feels that there shouldn't be any deviation from it.
That being said, Porter isn't the type to get mad. He gets quietly disappointed and concerned. A little wrinkle might form between his eyebrows and maybe you'll get a frown, but that's all you'll get. That and a wall of silent disapproval. He also isn't the type to get roll-on-the-floor, pee-your-pants happy. He laughs, but it's mostly short and often times, a smile is all you'll get. But they are genuine smiles. He can get a little rowdier when around his friends, but it's not a common sight.
He's not very sensitive to insults or criticisms, either. He takes other people's opinions into account, but it is often his own that matters the most to him. That doesn't mean he's self-centered, though. He has a lot of heart to give to those around him and a lot of loving care to extend to the important people and animals in his life. The care just won't be heartfelt declarations of love. He's a person where you have to look and read the actions instead of waiting for verbal clarification.
EXTRA QUIRK: Porter is kind of weird about his mare, Blue. Weird in a lovey, super-affectionate, you're-my-one-and-only way. You might see him as strong and silent until you see him with Blue.
FATHER: Ronald Wood
MOTHER: Doris Wood
SIBLINGS: Ezra Wood (19)
PET: A bay warmblood mare named Blue Me Away and her foal, Baby Blue

CHILDHOOD: Porter never knew his biological parents. He doesn't even know their story today. He doesn't know why they gave him up. He doesn't know their names. He doesn't know if they were young kids who made a mistake or adults who just weren't financially capable or what. He's not sure if anyone knows. When he asks his mom and dad about it now, they just kind of shrug and say he was abandoned and placed with them only a few weeks later.
He's not really that curious, anyway. His adopted mother and father were with him his whole life so he doesn't have a whole lot to wonder or think about. He was born sometime in January. He celebrates his birthday on January 5th. He grew up with two caring parents who didn't helicopter over him too much and an older brother who was simultaneously his best friend and biggest role model. The two years between them wasn't enough to make them unable to relate to one another, but it was enough to elevate Ezra to some other status in Porter's eyes. He wasn't treated differently, either. Even though Ezra was theirs by blood, Ronald and Doris treated him just the same. There was no double standard there and Porter loved it.
His childhood was full of brotherly love and brotherly fights and brotherly mischief. His life on the Wood Farm was pretty dang picturesque. He picked up on riding like a fish takes to water. He wanted nothing more than to spend all his time on the back of a horse and that didn't change much as he got older.
He learned about horses and the world and school and everything else from his big brother. Ezra really took him under his wing and tried to show him everything and prepare him for everything. Porter thought that when they were older, they could take over the farm for their parents and live here with their families.
Then Ezra's powers manifested and things got turned on their head.
ADOLESCENCE: When Ezra was eleven and Porter was nine, Ezra manifested his power. He acted like he was sick, hiding in his room and refusing to come out. Porter was worried, tried to comfort his brother as much as he could through the locked door, but nothing really got better until the recruiters from Bellefonte showed up. It turned out that this wasn't even that big of a surprise. Their mother was a mutant, so maybe Ezra had just taken on that same gene. He had something called "hypercognition" that made the brother he knew, who got average grades, into some kind of whiz kid.
Ezra got sent to Bellefonte Academy while Porter continued to attend the local grammar school. It was weird not having his brother around as much. Ezra was gone most of the day at the academy and then spent a lot of his time at home alone. Sure, Ezra still made time for Porter, and they still did things together on the farm, but it was different. And Porter didn't have much hope of bridging that gap. After all, they weren't biologically related. What was the likelihood that he might be a mutant worthy of Bellefonte Academy as well?
Pretty low, but apparently not impossible. Porter's ability manifested when he was twelve, in the summer before he entered seventh grade. He'd been tacking up one of the horses for a trail ride and decided to use one of the older saddles they had in the tack room. As soon as he'd touched the thing, it was like he was transported back in time. Some older, bearded man making leather, the rolling of the backs of so many horses underneath the frame, a skinny young men cleaning the straps with oil. He was gapsing when the images finally released him. He thought he was going crazy and didn't mention it to anyone, until it happened again with a coffee mug.
The recruiters from Bellefonte showed up just two days later and told him the good news; he'd be joining his brother at the academy.
Although Porter lived at home during his years at the school, he did spend a lot of time on campus. It was a necessity, since he was learning how to control and manage his ability and taking classes there at the same time. His academics didn't really improve, but sort of fluctuated between "passable" and "poor". His parents didn't really approve, especially considering Ezra's excellence, but he wasn't a bad kid. He was quiet enough to slip under the radar of most of his academic teachers since he didn't disrupt class like some of the clowns and didn't necessarily fail for any semesters.
He especially enjoyed spending time at the stables since it was like a little slice of home for him. Even though he'd always prefer his ranch, he liked to head over there and at least sit in the horsey atmosphere to get some fresh air. He made a few friends, but he was quiet, and not around as much as the other kids who lived in the dorms. He was always up for friendly conversation and often talked politely with kids his age in his classes, but he wasn't really the type to make into your best friend.
His focus continued to be on horsemanship (even though nowadays he rode with the least amount of tack possible). He still wanted nothing more than to own the ranch when his parents retired and he was becoming quite the horseman in the process. Even if his intelligence wasn't on par with his brother's, he was able to hold his own in his parents' eyes because of his dedication to their farm way of life.
