NAME: Hamish Joseph Blackwood
NICKNAME: None right now
AGE: 17
GENDER: Male
ORIENTATION: Heterosexual (Or at least he’d say so, though he’s never really had a chance to freely explore his sexuality.)
POSITION: Student
FACE CLAIM: Liam Hemsworth
POWER: Kinetic Projection
Hamish is capable of creating a burst of kinetic energy from his body as a physical wave of force. Whenever he performs an action, he can trigger his ability by consciously or unconsciously willing it to activate, creating a physical force that extends out from his body, reaching up to ten inches away. This allows him to amplify any action taking, making it far stronger than it would normally be. If he were to throw a punch or a kick, for example, the force would push out from the foot or fist, if he were to tackle someone, the force would extend from around his shoulder, and if he were to move his arm in more of a sweeping motion, the force would sweep outward in the same manner. When using as much force as he can, he is capable of using his power to break through a brick wall, though doing anything of this sort for an extended period of time will have serious effects on his body. His power not only amplifies the force of his actions, but can be used in a shielding manner. If he were to activate it at the correct moment while moving in the direction of an oncoming force, he could effectively deflect or dissipate it. He doesn't have to use as much force in order to do this, as the incoming force will cause his kinetic blast to become 'harder' in the same manner as if something were to hit water at high speed. Though his power can be used in this manner, triggering it at the right time can prove very difficult.
His power is activated by a mental trigger, but the amount of force generated is dependant on how much power he puts into the action. He often explains this with an analogy to lighting gas on fire. Imagine releasing gas from a valve, then igniting it with a lighter. His mental trigger is the equivalent of the lighter, and the force he puts into the action is like the amount of gas released from the valve, since more gas would create a larger amount of fire, in the same way that the force his power generates is dependant on the force he puts into the action.
Limitations
- Hamish has very little control over the power itself. When activated, it will amplify the force of whichever action he is currently performing, with the degree of power dependant on the physical action, rather than on his mental control. This means that if he were to use too much physical force, the resulting kinetic blast would be stronger.
- The simple nature of this power’s trigger means that it can be set off by momentarily heightened emotions, such as surprise, shock, fear or anger. Constant control is required to avoid accidentally activating it.
- Hamish’s power lasts for only around a second, meaning that a separate action must be taken for it to be triggered again. This prevents him from creating a constant shield around himself.
- The use of Hamish’s powers takes a considerable amount of energy. Though this isn’t normally noticeable, extended use can lead to exhaustion, which can cause loss of consciousness. Exhaustion sets in suddenly rather than over time, meaning Hamish could appear to be fine one minute and collapse the next.
- It is hard to accurately time the usage of this ability in many situations. Since the ability is triggered in an instant and lasts only a short time, properly managing when to use it can become difficult.
- In addition, it can be hard for him to aim his power at times. While direct actions will often result in a direct and targeted use of his power, any more general movements that trigger his ability will often have less accuracy.
- In order for Hamish to use his power in a shielding manner, he must be in motion in some way or another. Since his ability can only activate when he is performing some action.
- Even though Hamish’s ability allows him to avoid physical contact, he will still feel the results, though usually to a lesser degree. This rarely proves to be a problem beyond a few aches and pains, but the harder he hits, or is hit, the more severe the effects. While he is technically capable of taking a heavy hit by using his ability, he will feel some pain from it, though the reaction will be somewhat delayed. So if, for example, someone with a knife were to attack him, and he managed to block them with his ability, he will slowly start to feel an ache around the area of their strike, rather than severe pains and injury in a specific area as a knife would normally cause.
- Even though Hamish’s power allows him to put considerable force behind his actions, he can’t overcome every obstacle. If he were to hit something that was too strong to be moved or broken, the effects his power has on his body would become far more severe.
Side-Effects
- The main side-effect of Hamish’s power is that his muscles take extra strain as a result of its usage. While in the short term there aren’t many noticeable ill effects, a couple of hours afterwards he will start to feel an ache in the muscles around where his power was triggered. So if, as before, he were to use his power when throwing a punch, he would start to feel an ache in his upper arm, as well as in the joints of his wrist and hand. The severity of the ache will depend on how powerful his ability was when activated, and on how much it was used. In some cases, this can leave him barely able to use certain muscles for hours, even days if he overexerts himself.
- A longer-term effect of the usage of his powers is that his muscles are likely to deteriorate at an increased rate, leading to potential muscle related problems later on in life. Though he takes care to keep himself in shape and hopefully counteract these effects to a degree, he is still likely to have significantly weakened muscles later in life.
- Though not a direct side effect, Hamish’s power has lead to him becoming rather wary in some situations, especially when in close proximity to other people or fragile objects, or when in high stress situations. He avoids any situations that might lead to him accidentally activating his power, such as contact sports and horror movies, even if he might possibly enjoy them.
- Due to his power’s nature, Hamish has a dislike of being contained or enclosed. Tight spaces are bad, and being held back or reigned in physically is even worse. These situations may even cause him to trigger his power without meaning to.
- Because his power requires a large amount of energy, Hamish’s appetite and metabolism are both rather high. He is hungry quite often, and even eating a full meal doesn’t sate him for long, as his body burns through energy at a faster rate even when he isn’t using his powers.
APPEARANCE SECTION:
The first thing most will notice about Hamish is his height. Standing at almost 6’3”, he has quite an imposing presence. His height is further exemplified by his figure, which is rather muscular and strong looking. Though he never committed himself to any traditional workout or bodybuilding regime, he still has a rather strong body from years in sports and other practical physical activities. He isn’t muscled to the point that it becomes ridiculous though. A combination of genetics and his own love of sports lead to him growing a reasonably fit body, with muscle that is naturally grown, and nor forcibly built by hours lifting weights or anything of the sort. Since his powers developed he has made sure to maintain his body, so as not to heighten the risk of any serious side effects it may bring about. He bears broad shoulders, and noticeable, though not overly defined muscle throughout his body, giving he appearance of someone who partakes more in practical activity and sport than someone who simply works out.
On closer inspection, one might notice that Hamish’s eyes are a rather striking blue, while his hair is an almost sandy brown, always kept short and out of the way. His eyebrows are somewhat darker in colour, and grow thickly, somewhat shading with his light eyes. When he neglects shaving, he quickly grows in a stubbly beard that gives definition to his facial features. He has a strong, but not overly jutting jaw line, enough to give his face a sense of strength without becoming a distraction. The rest of his facial features are nothing too spectacular. His nose is relatively straight (thought it has taken one ore two knocks throughout his life), and his lips are neither too thin nor overly plump.
MUST HAVE APPAREL:
Hamish prefers casual and comfortable clothing to anything too fancy or flashy. He will most commonly be seen in shirts or vests, depending on what he’s doing. His philosophy is that if you aren’t comfortable in what you’re wearing, then you may as well not wear it. For smarter occasions he has been known to wear a nicer shirt, though a tie is almost never seen around his neck. Simple patterns or slogans are his preferred decoration, and he’s more likely to be seen wearing a simple checked shirt than he is to be found wearing a brand name across his chest.
When it comes to pants, Hamish is of the opinion that you can’t do better than a good pair of jeans. Though there are other options for different situations, jeans are the best choice for day-to-day wear. They are sturdy, comfortable and easy to look after. When it comes to sports or more casual activities, then he will generally slip on a pair of sweatpants or simple shorts, but jeans are the go-to option when he isn’t planning on partaking in any physical activity.
Hamish has never been one for decoration, and so he almost always goes hatless, and will only wear a jacket or coat when the weather demands it. Clothes are usually more about function for him than style, and so with the exception of one or two nice shirts that he keeps for special occasions, the entirety of his wardrobe is casual and functional.
PERSONALITY SECTION:
On the surface, Hamish usually comes across as a casual, friendly and easy-going person. When first meeting someone he is cheerful, though never really formal. He is often seen as an easy person to talk to, and can quite easily slip into friendships. When it comes to friends, Hamish believes loyalty is one of the most important qualities he can have. Though he’s been burned in the past due to loyalties he’s held, he still keeps the view that it’s important to be dependable and to stick with people when they need you. Though he is far from distrustful, experience has taught him that blind loyalty isn’t always a good idea. Because if this, he tries to prove himself a good friend to others, and expects the same of them. If someone lets him down, they shouldn’t expect him to back them up as readily in future. Though he is loyal and friendly to those close to him, he has always had something of an internal wall that prevents him from opening up to others. It’s not that he doesn’t trust them, more that he was never encouraged to share his feelings when he was younger. Such things were seen as ‘softness’, and softness wasn’t treated well in the Blackwood household. Though it’s not impossible for Hamish to open up to others and share his innermost thoughts and feelings, he always feels a little uneasy doing so.
Hamish is a big lover of fun and friendly competition. Another aspect of his home life was that everything was a contest, and if there wasn’t a contest going on at home, there would be something competitive on television that could be watched. Hamish greatly enjoys competition, but doesn’t care so much about winning. While he thinks it’s important to give your all in whatever you’re doing, he does it more for the love of the event than the result. The way he sees it, a trophy or a medal is just an object, and the title of ‘winner’ is just a label that doesn’t really matter much in anything else, so even if you lose it’s no big deal. This was another area in which he differed from his family. For them it was all or nothing, and both he and his brother were pushed to win at everything they did. Though he was quite put off the idea of competing by this, he eventually rekindled his love for it, and now that his family is out of the picture, he indulges in it whenever he can… and whenever he feels he can trust himself. Certain activities scare him, due to his power’s rather chaotic nature. He won’t play any contact sports, for fear of injuring someone.
Though Hamish is generally easy to get along with, there are some things that can set him on edge or turn him against you. One of his biggest flaws is that he can get quite defensive when pressed about certain issues or relentlessly teased in some manners. Though name-calling has never really affected him, people persistently bothering him and purposefully being annoying does wear on his nerves somewhat. He’s not good at backing down when he does get into such a position either, meaning that he can get himself caught in a disagreement that neither side will back down from. He finds these situations incredibly frustrating, and can get quite angry as a result. Though he can enjoy a friendly debate, long, drawn out, confrontational arguments are one of the easiest ways for him to get riled up. Alongside this is the obvious way of mistreating someone he’s close to, or of picking on someone. Throughout his earlier life he lived in an environment where bullying was seen as just ‘the way things were’, and since moving away he’s realised just how much he hated that. Though Hamish enjoys a good joke or a casual prank, there’s a limit that he can tolerate, and if someone passes that limit with him, he can get quite riled up. Though he tries to temper his anger, there are some things that will still get him worked up, and once his is in such a situation, he finds calming down again can be pretty difficult.
When it comes to relationships beyond friendship, Hamish can be a little… confused. Thought he’s had several relationships throughout his teen years, none of them ended up getting very serious. His inability to properly open up probably caused this in part, as did his limited experience with what a good relationship should be like. Though his parents were fairly happy together, they never really showed each other much affection, and his father always had a clear dislike of any ‘sappy’ action taken by guys. Heterosexuality was the only way to be where Hamish grew up, and he never really considered that there could be an alternative until he left his family. He went through quite a patch of uncertainty, not because he thought he was gay, but that he found it hard to accept other sexualities, even though he knew there was nothing wrong with them. He still finds thinking about sexuality unusual, but has tried to accept others more for who they are, and to remove the prejudice that was ingrained in his mind from when he was younger.
EXTRA QUIRK:
Hamish has a love of food, and more specifically, a big soft spot for really good cooking. Though he will eat almost anything, and can enjoy a variety of foods, a well-made meal pleases him like almost nothing else. He traces this back to the fact that his mother was an ok cook, but not spectacular, whereas her sister, his aunt, was amazing. Whenever he visit her she would make the best meals, and since her attitude was far friendlier and more relaxed than the rest of the family, he always associated those good meals with happy, laid back times. To this day, nothing can make Hamish calmer and happier in a short time than a good plate of well cooked food.

CHILDHOOD:
Hamish was born into a small family, in a small town in Scotland. His parents were simple, down to earth people. His mother was a housewife, who stayed home to cook, clean, and look after the children. His father was a dock worker, who spent long days loading and unloading cargo. They lived in a little terraced house with five rooms and not much else going for it. His early life was simple enough. He had toys, he stayed at home a lot, and he played with his cousin Joel, who was only three months younger than him. His brother was born a couple of years later, and for a while everything stayed pretty easy. As Hamish grew, he began to pick up on a few things. His father liked sports; he liked watching them, playing them, betting on them, you name it. More than that, he liked winning, and he liked his team winning, and he got pretty angry when the side he was supporting didn’t win. He also noticed that his parents both seemed to dislike many kinds of people, from ‘the gays’, to politicians, to their neighbors. This didn’t seem all that problematic to him at first. Surely, if his parents thought a certain way, then it made sense for him to think that way too. So he played sports, and always tried to win, and he would treat the neighbor’s son badly when he saw him at school. The older he got though, the more he felt that there were problems with the way things were. He enjoyed playing the sports far more than winning them, and certainly didn’t feel bad when he did lose, that is, until he spoke to his dad next, and heard his disappointed tone.
Things didn’t change much for most of Hamish’s childhood. He would hang out with his cousin a lot, and his brother would often tag along. According to his dad and his uncle Andrew, Hamish and Joel, his cousin, were just like they had been when they were younger; inseparable, loyal to each other until the end, a pair of little tricksters who didn’t care what anyone thought of them. The first major disturbance in his life came when the trio went a little too far with their bullying of the neighbor’s son. They caught him while he was washing hands in school when Hamish was nine, and splashed him with water to make it look like he’d wet himself. Though it had seemed like just a little fun to them, the boy had gotten very upset, and that night, his father paid a visit to the Blackwood household. He and Robert Blackwood had a fierce argument, and the families’ mutual dislike turned into a full on feud. Hamish watched all of this happen, and felt horrible both at causing his neighbors such distress, and at starting such a fight between their fathers. Though he didn’t change immediately, he found that he enjoyed taking part in such bullying less and less, and before he was into his teens he had stopped completely. His cousin and brother continued, teasing Hamish for ‘going soft’. As he moved into his adolescent years, the boy felt the rift between him and his family growing more and more.
ADOLESCENCE:
Hamish would often visit his aunt Sylvia who lived in the south, along with his brother and cousin, and grew to like these visits more and more as he got older. His aunt lived in the country, so there weren’t any other kids there, and she made the best food. She was kind, and much more easy going than either of his parents, or his uncle Andrew, who would often spend time with his father. During these trips he could spend time with his cousin and brother without having to gang up on anyone else, and there were always rooms in his aunt’s large house where he could go to be by himself. There was a long road that wound around Sylvia’s property, and Hamish sometimes took to jogging or running around it. He would sometimes race with his cousin and brother, and often won. At home, things were becoming more stressful between Hamish and his family. His brother had grown quite an attitude, and would often pick fights with bigger kids, knowing that his big brother and cousin would step in if he got into any trouble. And Hamish did step in, regularly. Even if he didn’t like the way his brother did things, he’d always been taught that you stick up for your family, no matter what.
Hamish’s schoolyard fights led to him being punished many a time by the teachers, but at home, he was praised for doing the ‘right thing’. His father was happy that his first-born son was a fighter, and enrolled him in a boxing class when he was twelve. He proved quite adept, and started competing in small tournaments against other towns. Of course, this meant that he had to win, lest he disappoint his father. It was during one of these matches that his power showed itself. He was fifteen, and taking part in one of the regularly held area tournaments. His semi-final match was against a boy from a nearby town whom Hamish had fought many times before. This was the one kid he could never beat. As soon as the match started his opponent started pounding him, never giving him an opportunity to get any hits in. Hamish was stuck, trying to block, hearing his father calling to him over the roar of the crowd, berating him for losing. He struck out with anger, a burst of energy shooting from his gloved hand, hitting the other boy square in the face. He flew across the ring, hitting the ropes at the other end, falling down, unmoving. The crowd had gone silent, and Hamish was left staring at his downed opponent, not sure what had happened.
The other boy had been rushed to hospital, where he was treated for a concussion and serious neck injuries. He survived, but couldn’t even move his neck for months. Hamish had been disqualified from the final round, despite his father’s protests. For the next week he had been angry with everyone, shouting the house down over the smallest thing. Hamish, on the other hand, had been silent. He couldn’t stop thinking of the sight of the boy flying backwards and then falling down, limp. Eight days after the match, recruiters from St. Bethany school in England came, and he was sent off to an academy for his kind.Hamish was shaken by his experience with his powers, and was reluctant to use them again, but the trainers and staff of the school were insistent that he learn about them through controlled use, and so, over time, Hamish began practicing, working out what he could do, and what the effects were. He came to find that he actually liked the academy, though it was very different from his home… or perhaps because it was so different. He made a few friends, and started taking part in track events, as well as playing a few casual sports with other students. Everything was going well, until another boy his age decided to make him into an object of fun.
This other boy was named Frederick, and he was a big joker, a fan of pranks, and a lover of teasing and name-calling. Though Hamish put up with a lot of the names, the persistent jokes and pranks got to him. His things would go missing from locker rooms, only to be found hidden up in a tree of the grounds, and his books would be graffitied if he left them for even a moment. On one occasion, his dorm was even messed up when he left the window open. He returned to find everything in pink wrapping paper, and bright red ribbons wound around every object, creating a vast web. It took him half the night to sort everything out. Hamish had made a point not to get angry or to fight since he found out what he could do, but this was all proving too much for him. The final straw came one lunch break. Hamish was heading to a table to sit with some friends, when he passed Frederick, who tripped him, sending his meal all over his shirt. This was too much for Hamish, who snapped and swung at the other boy. Frederick’s power was force fields. He sometimes used it to make barriers in doorways that Hamish was walking though, but now he had to use it to protect himself from his blows. The fight was pretty one-sided, with Hamish simply beating on Frederick until fatigue set in and he had to stop. In this time though, he had caused some pretty serious damage to the cafeteria, and almost hit several innocent bystanders. He was sent to the head of the school, along with Frederick, and both were seriously reprimanded for the incident.
The pranks and jokes didn't stop there though, if anything they increased in volume. Hamish had had enough of just sitting and taking it. He had been on the other side of this before. He knew that Frederick wouldn't just stop, especially now that he knew he could get a reaction. Their fight was the talk of the school for some time, and some people wanted to see if Hamish could be pushed into doing it again. So the boy took matters into his own hands; he started playing Fred's game, pranking him whenever he could. He wasn't as good at it, but he still managed to get a reaction. From that point on the two boys were constantly at each other's throats, either pranking each other, or arguing. Several more fights occurred, though neither ended up being seriously hurt beyond feeling the strain of using their powers too much. Eventually the staff of the school had to intervene. After Hamish flooded Frederick's dorm room and Frederick tried to retaliate by slipping something into his lunch, which Hamish had taken to preparing himself. Frederick was caught, and another fight ensued, this time in a classroom. Once more Hamish was sent to see that head of the school, this time alone. The two discussed the incidents, and since it was clear that neither boy would back down, it might be better for everyone if they were separated. Hamish agreed, knowing that it would be the only way he would be free of this rivalry. Since Hamish had often been the aggressor in the eyes of the school, it was decided that he would be the one to transfer to another school. And so he was sent to Bellefonte academy, to start over yet again, though hopefully with less drama this time round.
ADULTHOOD: (Not quite an adult yet.)
SAMPLE:
(Taking place during Hamish’s time at St. Bethany)
Hamish sat, preparing himself for one of the best times of the day; lunch time. In front of him was a burger and a large plate of chips. The restaurant he was sat in was small, but had a quaint, friendly feel. It was a frequent haunt of the young lad, mostly because of the care they took in creating their meals. As he began to eat, he spotted another student entering through the front doors. The boy was tall and athletic looking, with sandy blonde hair. He spotted Hamish, and headed over, giving a wave.
“Knew I’d find you here, Hamish,” he said with a grin as he took a seat, glancing down at the meal laid out between him and the other boy.
”David,” Hamish replied simply, giving a nod of his head by way of a greeting. He didn’t say anything more, choosing instead to take another bite of his burger.
”Hurry up, ok?” The other boy leaned in, the grin remaining in place on his face. ”You owe me a race. It’s not going to be a repeat of last time, you know.” The dark haired Scot looked up, slowly finishing off his bite before opening his mouth to speak again.
”Do you know what this is?” He gestured down to the meal before him. ”This is a 100% Aberdeen angus burger, with the finest cheddar, fresh lettuce, and a slice of tomato so juicy you could die.” The other boy showed little reaction, causing Hamish to sigh. ”What’s the one rule when I’m eating?”
“Don’t interrupt you,” David responded in a resigned tone.
”That’s right. Now, if you don’t mind, I’m going to finish my meal. I’m going to enjoy it, let it settle and then I’m going to run rings around you. Deal?” Hamish was wearing his own grin now. He’d held a friendly rivalry with David since he’d first joined the track club. The two were about evenly matched, but lately it seemed fortune had favored Hamish the most.
”Alright, but don’t think you can back out, I’ll end your winning streak yet.” David leaned back, but not before reaching in and taking a chip from Hamish’s plate, stuffing it into his mouth. The other boy pointed a finger at his friend, putting on a stern expression.
”Am I going to have to make another rule?” He asked, holding the frown for a few moments before chuckling. ”Just make sure to ask next time, alright?”
