NAME: Demeter Smith (prefers to be called Demeter of the Inheritors) [Birth name: Mary Smith]
NICKNAME: Dem; Demi
AGE: Fourteen; September 21st; 2000
GENDER: Female
ORIENTATION: Unsure
POSITION: Bellefonte Student
FACE CLAIM: Maisie Williams
POWER:
Terrakinesis
Technically, terrakinesis is what it sounds like: the movement of earth via the power of the mind. This means that with a thought, a terrakinetic can move earth and earth based materials. This focuses mostly on moving dirt, dust, sand, and often rocks and the like.
Demi's power, however, is connected as much to her muscles as her mind, mostly because that's the way she's been trained to do it. It looks and functions much like a “bending” power would: she has to complete gestures and motions with her body, often the entire body, in order to move the various materials. This requires a fair amount of spaces most of the time, though Demi's gotten better at doing this with shorter motions. Theoretically she could manage it with just her mind, since she does have a kinesis ability, but even if she manages this, it's generally to a much lesser degree than she's currently capable of doing.
For Demi, therefore, the various motions and movements pull earth and earth materials out of wherever they are and bend them to her will. It's again to pulling against invisible weights: which requires a good deal of focus on her end. As of right now, she can only lift roughly half her body weight (~50 lbs), and that's with extreme strain on her part, and it certainly won't last for long. She's also much better at controlling loose dirt and rocks than anything more solid. She has trained exhaustively in fighting that lends itself quite well to her ability (which was the point; more on this in the main body of the app).
Dirt also has a tendency to stick to her, and she'll often gather various debris about her body to use for various punching and kicking. This matters for Demi because she's constantly punching and kicking people.
Limitations
-Demi cannot create earth; she needs some of it around in order to operate
-power is linked to her mental and physical strength; the more tired she is, the more quickly her ability fades.
-rock is significantly harder to work than dirt; and the strain shows
-can only lift an absolute maximum of 50 lbs, and that will likely exhaust her
Side-Effects
-headaches and muscle strain after too much use
-nearly constantly dirty
-grows increasingly uneasy when deprived of dirt
-feels ill around large bodies of water
-likely become more stoic, but, well, that's hard to tell with Demi
APPEARANCE SECTION: Somewhere, buried underneath layers of dirt, grime, sweat, and probably blood, Demi might be a passingly cute girl. Not extremely cute, not the type that will turn heads or win beauty pageants, but perhaps cute enough to get noticed by boys and girls who swing that way. They'd have to be interested in a completely flat fourteen year old girl made almost entirely of wiry muscle who practically stomps with every walk, but there might be some interest there. You'd have to knock the dirt and stuff to find the skin underneath, which is probably white because sunshine doesn't penetrate her “protective layer” very often. She's not overly pale though, mostly because sunshine does penetrate her protective layer from time to time.
The girl will not smile. Instead, she seems to enjoy stomping about and looking as filthy as she possibly can. Her hair is usually shorn short and is a dusty brown color; it's hard to tell if it would be “dusty” without the nearly constant “protective” layer protecting her from the world at large. It is never done according to any style known to man, unless that man believes that hewing your hair off with a knife qualifies as a style.
Her eyes are a sort of gray. Sort of button nose. Tight lips, again: almost never smiles. Brow often furrows in confusion, frustration, or outright anger.
MUST HAVE APPAREL: Said wiry body usually hides underneath clothing that looks to be made from various sacks. The people in care of Demi (yeah, it has to be worded like that) believe that you should only wear clothing that is handmade and touched only by mutant hands. As a result, everything Demi wears is very rough-hewn and sexless, often hanging loose on her body. As she could care less what she looks like, this doesn't bother her. In fact, she thinks everyone else dresses indecently, not because of showing skin (this doesn't bother Demi in the slightest; she'd probably walk around naked if that was an option), but because of the flash and tainted touch of human hands.
She does possess a totem that she often wears in a thong around her neck. It appears to be the sign of Demeter, which is obviously the goddess she's named after. Attempts to touch it will be met with violence.
PERSONALITY SECTION: Demi will likely punch someone when she firsts meets them. This has very little to do with anything to do with them; she will just likely get frustrated with that person within three or four sentences of talking with them and decide that punching them is easier than trying to figure out what they're saying. A lifetime raised among a crazed cult of hyper-religious mutants has left Demi with quite the sheltered existence. She simply doesn't understand social interaction among people outside of the Inherited, and when something doesn't work, she chooses to default to what she already knows. In this case, that involves a religion that believes fully that mutants are superior and that you can prove your mutants genes are even better by besting other mutants at being mutants.
This isn't to say that Demi isn't frustrated. She can't help but wonder a few things about her position. For example, if the Inherited are so amazing, then why are so many others against them? Surely everyone would want to be part of the super-awesome group that's going to inherit the world when the eventual uprising occurs, right? That just makes sense, as far as Demi's concerned. But she was never taught to really teach others about her beliefs or to explain them: she was taught to listen and to believe single-mindedly in her actions. So instead of reasoning or thinking, she'll lash out.
Demi understands next to nothing about culture, history, or much of society in general. The Inherited taught her a very skewed version of the way the world works, wherein mutants did everything awesome in the world and have been around for centuries. Hearing anything contrary bothers Demi and she'll often get into loud arguments that, again, end with her attempting to fight whomever is doing the arguing, because that's easier for her to handle than other options.
Despite this or possibly because of it, Demi is fearless to a fault. She doesn't back down from anyone, no matter their size, talent, armament, or motivation. When she believes something is right, she will stand for it, and there will be no moving her. If she believes that someone deserves to be protected for whatever reason, then she will leap to their defense. This is especially pertinent when dealing with mutant/human interactions. Demi will side with the mutant irregardless of the situation and will violently work to defend anyone she can manage.
Thankfully, she has been trained to be this aggressive, and all that fighting has paid off. The Inherited teach their children a unique set of martial arts that incorporates their powers into more complex moves, often working from a strange combination of Thai Chi and Krav Maga known as the Flow. Demi has been learning what amounts to “Mutant Fu” since she was seven, and thoroughly enjoys using it against people. She hasn't had nearly as much time actually matching her ability with it, though she's determined to do so.
In fact, determination is also one of her better qualities. Demi will not quit, regardless of outs or situation. If she believes she needs to learn something for whatever reason (usually to make herself better or further the Inherited agenda), then she will not stop until she masters it, irregardless of the consequences.
If someone can prove themselves to be a strong mutant who is likely to Inherit, then Demi will listen to and respect them. This usually involves besting her in several fights, and it doesn't mean that she'll stop trying to fight whomever, because she actually believes that repeated attempts at fighting are the way you show respect to someone. In case this isn't obvious, she's pugnacious to the extreme. Once someone has earned her respect, she will start to listen to them and could possibly adhere to what they say with the same kind of intensity she gives to the lessons taught to her by the Inherited.
EXTRA QUIRK: There's the nearly always dirty bit for one thing. For another, she still speaks in terms of the Inherited.
MOTHER: Gaea of the Inherited (Gaea Smith) (34)
BROTHERS: Unknown to Demi, but: Ra Smith (16); John 6 of the Inherited (12); Mark of the Inherited (6) [likely most of these are half brothers]
SISTER: Sarah of the Inherited (10); Ruth of the Inherited (8); Martha 3 of the Inherited [likely these are half sisters]
PET: none
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: not yet
WORTHY MENTIONS: Ceres of the Inherited [Honer] (34); Horus of the Inherited [Guide] (54); Amaterasu of the Inherited [Guide] (36); Vashti of the Inherited [caregiver] (34)
CHILDHOOD: In case it wasn't obvious by now: Demeter was born Mary among the religious cult known as the Inherited. Her mother had no clue who her father was, mostly because she'd slept with several men throughout a set period of months falling in the first few months of the year. There are at least two men among the Inherited who share characteristics with Demi, and genetic testing is not allowed among them (because this type of testing is believed to be something humans do; the only testing they do is whether you have mutant genes or not). Demi was immediately given up by her mother to be raised by various caregivers, though she clung to Vashti in particular.
Most of Demi's extremely early childhood can be laid therefore at a mix of milk mothers who tended to her and then Vashti who helped teach her the basics. By age five, she was deemed old enough to move on to being instructed by the various teachers and instructors among the people (known as Guides). Demi bounced through several guides, but she naturally drifted closer to Horus (who instructed the Inherited on various aspects of mutant abilities) and Amaterasu (martial arts instructer). Her childhood was extremely austere and harsh from this point therefore. She would wake at dawn, begin her instructions in the Flow, complete several lessons on various subjects of import to the Inheritance, eat a breakfast of oats, continue instructions in the Flow (usually armed at this point), eat a lunch of bread and cheese, complete lessons on mutant powers and their uses, and then finish with “free time” that usually consisted of attacking children (though some of the earlier ones do attempt various games that are supposed to hone their innate abilities).
The Inherited believe that Mutants are destined by the Divine Will to Inherit the world. Thus they remove themselves from the world at large, insisting that the world is poisoned because too many humans run it. They believes that one day something will happen and mutants will take over the world. They are not, as of now, aggressive toward humans. Instead, they seem to be waiting for something to happen that will nudge them toward this.
In the meantime, they breed mutants with one another, producing children that therefore should be mutants. If you pass a certain age and are proven not to be a mutant, you are expunged. When your ability develops, you are quickly given an intense, several week crash course on how to use your abilities properly and merge them with the Flow before you are prepared to be sent to one of the schools. The Inherited always agree with school officials and send their children willingly, often telling the children what they believe Bellefonte to be. Among them, gaining the ability is marvelous for several days. The child is even given an entire day off and allowed to celebrate intensely (for that is the day they come into Partial Inheritance and receive their Inherited Name). Of course, they're also instructed that most of the schools are dens of pure evil filled with tainted mutants that should be treated with the utmost caution.
ADOLESCENCE: But back to Demi in particular, or Mary, by this point. She craved learning her particular ability, throwing herself into various lessons and impressing many of her instructors with her sheer dedication. She also became increasingly frustrated by Vashti nudging her more toward other instructors. This frustration would only be enhanced later when Amateruratsu and Horus began nudging Demi to Ceres, and Demi is still attached to Ceres and quotes her regularly.
One day when she was fourteen, during practices with the flow, Demi began to notice the ground shifting under her feet. She'd always enjoyed being dirty, and it wasn't as if the Inherited were the cleanest people (most hygiene products are really damn hard to make without human help). This was different. As soon as she began her moves then, she felt the ground slipping. She tried to kick dirt at the head of the person in front of her, but instead found herself creating a hole into which she fell. She lay there giggling though, because she knew that she'd come into Partial Inheritance.
The celebration of that was wonderful, at least at the beginning. Demi wasn't thrilled about being named Demeter though, since that meant she received the name of a really lame Inherited (they believe that pretty well all mythological figures with any type of power were mutants and therefore Inherited). Still, she adapted easily enough, and she loved the intensive training she received under Ceres. Ceres was to “Hone” Demi's skills and attune her ability to the Flow before she would be sent to the nearest Academy (Bellefonte). So in the two weeks and a few days before Recruiters showed up, Demi practiced martial arts tirelessly and learned all about mutant abilities, as well as receiving special instruction on Bellefonte. She was given access to a laptop for the first time (mutant made) and given some basic knowledge of at least some of the things that work in the outside world, though a lot of it amounted to “avoid this because it's tainted.”
Then Ceres brought her to the recruiters and, per Inherited requirements, assisted Demi in moving and and beginning her time at the school. She arrived at the beginning of summer in the year 2014.
SAMPLE: The guy had to be about three times the size of the scrawny girl facing him. That didn't stop her from smirking, though said smirk had nearly been buried under a thick layer of mud and dust. Her arms were folded across her apparently scrawny chest, though anyone with training would recognize her body loosening in preparation.
“what's the matter? Are you so tainted that you don't even know you're being insulted? You're a disgrace to being a mutant: a fat ugly being that shouldn't be allowed to pass on his genes,” said the girl, leaning forward slightly. “And I'm going to kick your butt in about three seconds.”
She smirked then, shifting her feet. The ground around her seemed to slide slightly, and Demi was hoping that she could better control her Flow this time. The last time she'd tried this, with another student, they'd flicked their wrist and her entire Flow had gotten thrown off. There hadn't really been a fight then, because the person had walked off, leaving Demi shouting while she slipped and slopped about in a puddle of mud. Demi could feel the ground beneath her feet clinging better to her this time, and she was pretty sure that she could manage a good solid mud kick, at the very least. She was already planning out several moves.
Idiot had to move first. “What's the matter?” Demi called, throwing her fear into anger and taunts, as she'd of course been trained to do. “Are you worried that your Flow is weaker than mine? It certainly is, which is why I'm going to be kicking your butt. I'm thinking four moves, and at least one of them,” she pulled back her hand, concentrating, pulling dirt off her skin to form a little cloud. It wouldn't much besides create some grit, but hey, that was something right, “Involves me punching you in the face until you cry. So c'mon already, I'm getting bored here!”
