POWER INFO:
Illusions:
Ethan has the ability to make people experience and see things. Not just anything though. Only their fears. It's like there's a monitor in his head while he's around people and it flashes images of different things; spiders, snakes, confined spaces and darkness. From there, he can pick one and make it a reality. The person under the influence of his illusion can only see what he wants them to, they can't feel anything, and the illusion can not physically harm anyone. During the illusion, it's like the person is wrapped in a bubble of this fear, all they see and experience is what he is showing them, so it seems real.
Mutants with telepathy or some way of blocking the mind are the ones that he can't get to. The person has to be susceptible to being manipulated in some way. Ethan has the ability to make someone experience this illusion for up to ten minutes as long as he's not distracted by anything and can focus strictly on what he's doing. If he's distracted, the illusion flickers and it loses the feeling of reality.
Side effects include terrible headaches, nightmares of his own fears and hallucinations of common fears (spiders, snakes etc.).
"Fear doesn't shut you down, it wakes you up. And I want to see you wake."
That's the quote I live by, was taught by and will teach by. Don't like it, you can find someone else to harass with questions.
Your attitude problem is real after all.
I don't have an attitude problem. I have a problem with people asking questions about my personal life because it is none of their business.
Unfortunately for you Mr. Matthews, it is our business. You were told to come to us for a reason.
Exactly, I was told. I didn't do it willingly, and I don't even know why they made me see a damn shrink.
Well the sooner you answer our questions, the faster you can get out of here. Now please continue.
Fine. As I was saying, I live my life through that quote. My father, back when it was just me, taught it to me because he had been genius. He knew a million quotes, all of which could be pulled from his mind without hesitation. He used them constantly, but when my mother developed her drug problem, well, he turned to the bottle and forgot many of the quotes he used to spout off to me. Since I was relatively young, I managed to memorize many of them myself. My brother, however, was too young to see the genius in our father and instead only saw the bad that happened. I guess you could say he developed MCS, middle child syndrome. He's probably the most difficult to handle out of the three of us. I'd say Sarah was the least affected by what happened. Can't blame her much though, she's naive and ignorant, which is exactly what how I intended to keep it.
Nathan was old enough, only about a year and a half younger than I, so he grew up similar to myself. Very little sheltering for both of us.
When and how did you manifest? Was it before or after your brother and did you know about mutants?
One question at a time would be nice.
My apologies. Your manifestation, let's start there.
I was thirteen when I manifested. Illusions, right? You'd think it'd be kind of cool making someone see something fancy or intriguing. Not this kind of illusion though. Fear-based illusions, who'd have guessed? I was with Nathan and Sarah in the kitchen, cooking dinner because someone had to do it. Our father was in the living room watching a game, Mom was probably sleeping off her medication-induced coma. While I was cooking, Nathan wouldn't stop whining, and it was annoying me, then all of a sudden he got sheet white, all of the color draining from his face and he screamed. Loud. I just looked at Sarah and it was like seeing double. My sister was standing there, looking at Nathan in surprise, and there on the floor at her feet, was her...pale and rigid, like a corpse.
My father came in, even my mother was woken by the scream. The illusion faded a few moments later and three days later, I was taken to BA. It was in that short amount of time that I was told that my mother was a mutant, like me. Her ability gave her horrible migraines and pain, that was what led to her addiction to pain meds and fed into her drug problem.
That's a very traumatic event, how did it make you feel?
Don't make me answer that. I'm not here to talk about my feelings, I'm here to tell you what happened to make me a little less than pleasant.
Fine, fine. Continue on, what was your time at Bellefonte like?
It was actually the only time in my life that I enjoyed myself. Granted the first year was hell to get through, mostly because I hated leaving Nathan and Sarah to handle things on their own with two fucked up parents, but I knew Nathan could handle it. He's not stupid all the time and he loved Sarah enough to want to care for her. Once I suffered through that first year of being new, having a fucked up ability and having no idea how to interact with people outside of my family (I wasn't the favorite at my school, far too quiet), well I started venturing out more.
I was a teenage boy, I got involved heavily in sports, self-defense classes, and I trained my ass off as much as I could to get this ability under control, but it fought me just as hard.
I guess this is also when I tell you about the girl that got away, right? Faye LaBeau, Prom queen, popular girl that everyone loved. Guess you could say I was the prom king to her prom queen. Which I actually was. We had been best friends since I was fifteen and a half, she'd been there for about a year or so and we ended up in a class together. Smart girl, smartest at English. We got really close and that's when things started going downhill for me. I fell for her, big mistake, though we dated from the time I was eighteen until we both graduated. Two years and then she decided she wanted to spread her wings and fly while she was at college. It was ridiculous to say the least, but I dealt with it. Told her we'd still be friends, but the next guy she dated...well, I didn't take much liking to him.
This was when my 'attitude problem' came out. I'm a very jealous person, ya see? I don't like people staking a claim on what was already mine. So when Faye started dating again, I sabotaged it as much as I could which was what led to her cutting me off and us not talking for quite a few years.
Did you ever reconnect?
She teaches at BA, English teacher.
How does she feel about you being a trainer there?
She can't really get mad about it, I was technically here first. She's been here for a little over a half of a year. We haven't spoken though, I don't think she recognizes me.
How's your relationship with your family now that you're all adults?
Nathan and I both train students at Bellefonte, it's almost like a competition, who can train the best mutants, ya know? We're not the closest, but I would still do anything for him. Sarah, she's still living back at home, little Miss independent with her bubbly attitude, having as much fun as she can. I check up on her every week to make sure she's still doing well in school and whatnot. My father is dead and my mother is working through her own problems, I visit every holiday and occasionally on breaks. I'd say the relationships, though strained, are doing better than they had been before.
Do you think you'll ever grow out of this attitude problem of yours?
Keep asking me questions like that and we'll find out, won't we?
Calm down, it was a joke.
Well, I have a student to go put through hell, so it's time for me to leave.
I'll see you back here in a week, and we'll get down to the nitty gritty.
Wonderful, looking forward to it.
