FRANCOIS GUILLAUME LAFFONT
EIGHTEEN//MALE//HOMOSEXUAL//EMPATHY//STUDENT//BRANT DAUGHERTY
POWER INFO:
It is the power to fully feel, sense and understand the emotions, mood, feelings, hopes, fears, desires and dreams of others. Basically, François can read the feelings of others no matter how hard they try to hide them. He is like that able to see when one emotion actually hides another. Emotions locked deep inside someone requires him to be very close of that person, sometimes even to touch them.
He is affected by the emotions others have to a greater degree than normal people. When someone yells at you because they are angry, you yell back, but he feels that rage even before the person attacks him and sometimes the emotion overpowers him and he reacts as if it was his own. As a result, being in very crowded spaces can be hard for him, as he gets feelings from everyone flowing to him and it is sometimes hard to focus. Over the years he has learned to deal better with that fact but it is still overwhelming.
Strong emotions can also affect him. It’s like a tidal wave hitting him hard, making him share the pain or have sometimes trouble breathing whenever those feelings are too strong, no matter whether they are good or bad.
He is yet able to read emotional imprints left on objects but if something big happened somewhere, like any kind of tragedy, he can feel a small trace left behind. If he is able to sense what you are feeling, he cannot tell why you feel this, unless the reason is obvious, as he doesn’t read the mind. For example, he can feel your pain but not know who gave it to you. It is very much like hearing a quote out of its context. His power is also limited in the distance. He would feel what others feel within the room but not in the next.
He tries to prevent from reading people’s emotions. He often feels like he is prying in their private lives without their invitation when he does. Plus he sometimes fears that his reaction to these feelings has more to do with his power then him being naturally compassionate and he doesn’t like what it says about him.
François is pretty tall, standing at 6’1’’ or 185 centimeters as he would say. For he is French. He is strong built and works to maintain this silhouette. He always fancied strong built guys but since he never found a bodybuilder for a boyfriend he figured he could be someone else’s muscles. He likes to run and play sports a lot so it helps keeping him fit. He also loves to dance. He wouldn’t consider himself a great dancer but he knows the steps and he’s having fun with it. He can either do waltz, tango or samba, that kind of dances. Forget about ballet or hip-hop, he doesn’t know them too well. His hair is dark brown and usually kept short and well combed. He has piercing blue eyes and a constant smile on his face. François has a good sense of fashion. He isn’t one you will find looking disheveled.
As a French boy, you would understand that he learned to speak French first. But he understands English very well and over the four years he had spent here in America, he worked hard to tone his accent down so he would be easier to understand. He hates when people try to speak French though, especially if they can’t. Since he knows English, he’d rather they talk in their language than destroy his. This is why he will often go by the name of Franck since it’s easier to pronounce for those American kids. He loves the French culture though and tries to keep it in his life, by reading French books, listening to French music, watching French movies or eating French food. Yes, his steaks are red. Not well cooked, not medium, rare. He only has two exceptions, frogs and snails. He cannot even think of putting those in his mouth.
He is a very loyal and friendly person. He trusts people easily. His power helps at that, since he could tell right on the spot what they think of him. He knows who he is, both as a gifted kid and a homosexual and fully accepts it. He might not scream it everywhere, but he isn’t hiding. As a result, if someone has a problem with that, he believes it to be their problems. If someone tries to intimidate or humiliate him over the fact that he is gay, he would push it to the point of faking being in love with them, if they are boys, or pretend to be like those silly stereotypes people seem to have at times about gay people to show how silly those ideas are. He is also very confident and will always put a smile on his face, even if he wants to cry. Especially when he is down actually. He believes that after faking it for a while, even you start to believe it. And then things feel better. He is also quite generous.
He is a scaredy cat at times. He is very jumpy and will always startle if you crawl up from behind and grab him. He also cannot stand horror movies and is afraid of storms. He is also prone to nightmares, especially when related to the Bible. He doesn’t have a good history with the Holy Book, as his mother had been a catholic to the point of fanaticism. Despite this little scared boy attitude, he will stand up for people he cares for. And he is very curious. He is fascinated by history and human behaviour.
François is one to talk over fighting. He is a very good listener and a diplomat and will always try to solve a problem through discussion. But he is strong and could be a worthy opponent in a fight. However, when he is hurt or angry, he usually prefers to step away from the situation rather than lose his cool, which is easy if the other person is also pretty angry.
He was born in France to Simon Laffont and Adeline Perrault. They lived on the countryside in a small town. Not a lot of shops and noise, but fresh air and good people. His mother was extremely religious, more than anyone else in the family. It could be hard at times, since she was quick to punish you for every wrong you might have done. But despite the fact Franck did spent some nights not eating for lying or stealing a cookie before the meal, he still loves her. For there were great moments too.
He started to understand there was something different about him around the age of ten. It wasn’t his powers, it was homosexuality, even though there was nothing sexual back then. He was at a friend’s house, staying for the night, when a storm happened. He couldn’t sleep but he didn’t want to bother his friend’s parents and have them call his parents in the middle of the night because he was scared. His friend let him sleep next to him on the bed, much like children do in their parents’ bed when they are scared. They saw nothing wrong in it. But the mother did the next morning. She took them apart and tried to make them understand this was not acceptable. François could not see his friend at home ever since. But he started to understand he was more drawn to boys than girls afterwards.
He was about thirteen when his powers started to develop. It was really hard to explain to his mother and at first she was angry at his attitude. But when she started to understand what he was talking about, she grew scared of him. Everything that was not natural would scare her. And she was not vain enough to think it was God’s work turning her little boy into the next messiah or something. Which only left the Devil. She became terrorized of her son and even if she tried to hide it, he could sense it and it affected him greatly. At some point, she tried to convince the priest to perform an exorcism so he would be healed from this. But when he refused, she had friends come over and did it herself. No need to say that François was panicked. Had it not been for his father who came home to see them and took his son away from them, who was to say when it would stop?
Simon and François ran out of the house. They later met with the recruiter from Bellefonte Academy. Simon decided to move to Kalispell so he could be near his son, growing very protective of him ever since what happened. As he grew, learned to control his powers and mostly learned about his sexuality and started to date, he told his father who accepted it rather well. He preferred to do so than risk losing his son. But François didn’t have so great love stories yet. It is hard when you realize the reason your boyfriend hasn’t told anybody is because he is ashamed of liking you. Or when one doesn’t mind to kiss you but says you’re a monster when you try to go further. Still, he is a hopeless romantic and is certain he would find someone eventually. He also wishes to reunite with his mother, even if he knows he is pretty much everything her religion condemns.

SAMPLE:
Franck came to a conclusion: he had no luck in love. Not that long ago, he used to have a boyfriend. The guy still wanted to keep it hidden as he was dealing with it but the kissed they shared proved he liked him. That is, until Franck sat near him at the cafeteria and felt his shame as they were close of each other. Shame alone was a bad feeling to have when your boyfriend was near but when Franck tried to learn more, he wished he didn’t. The guy was ashamed of liking another guy. Obviously, he wished he liked only girls, like the rest of the world. His love story ended abruptly with yet another broken heart. Why did he always pick the wrong guys? Then again, how many gays could there really be around school? Still, he wished there could be a love story for him that would not end in tears. He wasn’t even looking for love at first sight with the fairytale ending, just a good relationship where the guy actually liked being with him. Was it so hard?
He hated thinking about it again, but it wasn’t easy when you had to see your ex every day. At least they were not sharing a dorm or anything of the like. That would be impossible. But what was harder was that whenever he let his emotions take the best of him like that, he was losing his focus and the feelings of everyone in sight were just getting thrown at him. Or maybe he was the one pulling them without him wanting to, not like he knew exactly how it worked.
He had to stop thinking about it. He knew what happened when he was not. The feelings of people would get all mixed up, his pain would reach out for other people’s pain, it will enhance his. Last time, he was certain one had suicidal thoughts. Turned out he was just a bit depressed and the mix of emotions became overwhelming and he read it all wrong. He didn’t want that to happen.
But he lost all appetite for his food before him and he found himself trying to find the guy. It was so silly. He didn’t need to try and focus on him to know he didn’t love him. He was just hurting himself doing that. Franck sighed, trying to stop and focus on the meal on the tray. But he had been playing with it for the past five minutes with his fork and it didn’t look so good anymore, making him want to eat even less than earlier. He pushed it aside.
Straight men had it easy. They could flirt with just any girl and if she turned to be a lesbian, she’d say it and not be all freaked out about him trying to hit on her. Guys tended not to like when other guys were flirting with them. And it was not like they were all bearing a “enter at rear” sign or something. He looked at everyone in the room. They were teenagers, with teenagers worries and desires. They all wanted to have a boyfriend, to be cool, to keep their friends forever and ever. He wished he had someone too.
