It was always somewhat nerve-racking, allowing someone to pet him. Anytime Humphries gave way to his baser, feline instincts, he knew he faced their taking him over for a few seconds. It was simply part of his being a cat: being petted made him feel nice, string distracted him more than he cared to admit, sleeping in the sun sounded like heaven, and catnip... well, best not to consider the possibilities of catnip. That was something else entirely.
Humphries kept his attentions on Devyn too. Thankfully those same feline instincts that were looking forward to being petted also happened to be screaming at him to make a break for it. The warring made it easier for Humphries to stay in control, to remain standing and in position as she pet. Though he couldn't quite stop himself from letting out a little bit of a purr, nor his head from moving slightly toward the hand. Yes, that most definitely felt good. Oh, under the chin? Yes, Humphries lifted his chin. The motion must have triggered his device too:
petting under chin feeling most pleasurable. muchly purred coming from within. well, he supposed that was rather obvious. As for why he felt soft, well, that had to do with grooming, which should have been rather obvious, even to someone as dense as Devyn Solway.

It felt a little weird to be the one doing the petting instead of being petted. For the rare occasions that she was in fact petted by those who were brave enough or at least trusted that she was not going to maul them in her other form. She honestly only used to use her powers around others for the sake of intimidation but things just happened that changed that a little. She would have done the same with Humphries. Scare him a little with her power, get him to back down, and just assert that she was stronger than him. It was just...something she did but he was in fact staff. Even if he was a cat and she still felt a lingering of discontent that he chose to be a cat.
Still, that was his choice and he seemed happy for it. Could she really be angry at someone for making a choice that lead to their happiness? She might have been feeling like life was unfair and that her choices were always wrong, but that didn't mean she could say that others choices were wrong as well. Funny how just meeting and petting a cat was making her come to understand this on a small level. She did chuckle when she could hear the purring, knowing that she was petting in the right places. "I love when people pet me under my chin or behind my ears. It's like the fingers just have the perfect design to them to het the perfect places." Devyn pointed out as she gave him some more scratched under his chin.
She did move to scratch him behind the ears a little before she would run her hand down his back. Devyn was not going to say it out loud, but she always enjoyed seeing how a cat would raise up its rear end when you would stroke it from head to tail. She didn't know why they did that, but it was just so...cute? "Think I can pet you again sometime? Like in passing, would you mind if I just pet you? I'll make sure to try and remember to ask each time to make sure that you are in the mood to be touched, but would that still be okay with you?" Devyn asked. She just...it was nice to pet the cat; it made her feel oddly relaxed.
Humphries could certainly understand why the petting would be most desirable. There was just something to it, something that triggered primal instincts within him, something that made him want to bond or get to know people or something. It definitely drew the purrs out of him, and he had to admit that purring certainly had its own particular set of pleasures. There was something to be said for being petted by somebody who knew that particular pleasure as well.
Humphries felt the hand travel down the rest of him and had to resist the urge to raise his bottom. He did find that it felt good and all, but there was something demeaning in the positioning. Plus, he could only allow himself to go so feline before things got strange.
The question was fairly familiar too: he'd certainly been asked it or variations of it before. He twisted to send the message: petting is often a nice gesture in greeting, but always be checking the mood and judging things well. cannot be having the positioning of authority compromised.

Devyn was slightly disappointed when Humphries didn't completely rise up his rear end like normal cats did as her hand traveled down the length of his body. She figured that just made it clear that while he might have been a cat now, that he had been a human at one point. She wondered what he looked like and what he was on a scale from one to ten. Yes, such things tended to end up in her mind and have her wondering about it. She was not going to ask if there were any photos or anything from him, but she did considered going to look it up sometimes when they got back to the school. Year Books should reveal him if he had been a student at BA.
Her phone buzzed and while she reached for it, she still made sure to pet the feline a little longer. Getting her money’s worth so to speak, even if she was not paying any money to pet him. It would have been smart of Humphries to start charging for pets because he likely could make profit off of it. Then again, pets were nice and Devyn personally knew she would take them for free when and if she could get them. Reading over the text she nodded, basically having said that she would try to ask before petting him to make sure it was okay. She knew that she was not so good at asking things and just sort of did things and that was why she said try.
"Got it. I'll try and not treat you like a cat so much. Just don't go running across the grass because I might chase after you a little bit. Could make it a game." Devyn said, chuckling a little. She liked that idea but she didn't think Humphries would. She did stop petting him now, stepping him back and giving him space to leave if he pleased. Not that he really needed space since cats could practically escape from small and tight places.
Humphries stopped purring and narrowed his eyes at Devyn as she teased about the whole chasing thing. No, no that did not sound like a game that he would particularly enjoy. Though he sincerely hoped that Devyn was mostly joking.
When she stepped back, Humphries' instincts took over. He began licking at himself, smoothing down the fur that had only recently been ruffled, letting his tongue loll over it. After all, he didn't exactly have anywhere he needed to be immediately, and this definitely needed tending to, before he decided to head off and actually do some of his job...
... or take a nap. He'd decide when he was done bathing.

It was not all that hard to tell that Humphries didn't look all that amused at Devyn's half joke there. She didn't need him to send her a text message saying that would not have been something he would enjoy doing. Still, she was not making any promises that she was not going to do it. Instincts and all, plus the fact that while the cat might not like it; Devyn would have. She always liked chasing things, even if she did warn people to not run from her. If they ran then that was basically asking them for her to chase them, but the problem was when she would go to chase them.
She didn't always know if she was going to remain friendly in the chase or if something would snap and she would pin them down and put the fear into them. He started to lick himself when she stepped back and Devyn could not help but to make a face. She was happy that she turned into a wolf and not a cat when she used her power. That and the fact that when she did lick herself she was not actually getting any fur or anything in her 'mouth' despite how the shadows would feel like fur. The beauty of her power and it feeling one way but still being made out of shadows.
They were done here so Devyn headed off to go outside and do some working out. She still had the urge to chase or hurt something so she was going to go take it out on the snow and likely get some more snowboarding in before she too would take a nap. "See you, Security Cat." Devyn said as she left.
The feline in Humphries kept driving him to continue bathing himself. His thinking mind did drag his attention up to Devyn, in time to notice her expression. Yes, sometimes it seemed to bother them that the being they had just had a conversation with was now doing something like this in public. Well, Humphries couldn't care less about someone's opinion of his feline form, so long as they continued to respect his position.
Humphries did pull away to look at Devyn as she said her farewell. He bobbed his head and blinked, acknowledging her exit before turning back to himself. Devyn Solway... quite the interesting young woman, and certainly one that he'd have to continue paying attention too. So many questions there, and she should have had her ability for a while. Well, Humphries knew that was one he could put on the back burner. He had more pressing matters.
