((Set the last week of September))
It wasn't often that Layla decided to play hooky from school. She really did want to do well, to push past everyone's expectations of her and succeed. She wanted to make those who cared for her proud because she'd made so many mistakes that led to disappointment from them. Her parents weren't high on her list of people to please anymore, but the presence within her that she always felt nearby was. She needed to be successful as a reflection of how she wanted to be seen by her brother. Nicholas was her motivation for most things, but there was always a small part of her that was motivated still by the little boy that she lost. Her brother was always pushing her to do better, challenging her as she knew he would have grown up doing.
Despite this drive she had to be perfect, she needed a day away from certain classes. The pressure of not deciding on a major yet was weighing down on her and she wasn't sure how much more she could take before she snapped and ended up failing out of college completely. Which would leave her massively in debt and she could barely afford what she was doing now, let alone if she had student loans to pay off. Her and Nicholas would be forced to live with Patch for...who knew how long at that rate. And she was not going to impose on anyone that way. One day off couldn't hurt her the way failing would and with the constant responsibilities, she needed the time for herself. No school work, no mom responsibilities, just her and her thoughts.
Layla was sitting by the lake, a cool beginning of autumn day wrapping her in leaves blowing and the small of water. It was calming, her place of refuge, away from most people now that the temperature was cooling down. She was wearing a light sweater and jeans, sitting on her leather jacket that she'd laid out beneath her. Her thoughts were traveling to past memories of times she'd sat here from her first year until now. This was where she'd gone when she found out she was pregnant and with the memory she found herself smiling faintly. Her reaction hadn't quite been the same that day, but it was a blessing that she looked back on now. She wouldn't give up her son for anything in the world. She couldn't even imagine having him with anyone else because despite her ill feelings towards her hook up, his biological father, Layla knew if it wasn't for his genes, she wouldn't have her beautiful boy right now. She'd have a totally different one.
Her eyes had closed and she leaned back against the cool ground. It was such a beautiful day.
